Im currently building a PC for the sole purpose of doing dvd films ps2 xbox etc, ive got a gigabyte GA-8IG1000MK mobo, going to be using p4 2.8 or 3.0 mhz cpu, having a dvd writer, dvd rom drive and a cd rewiter as well. The board has sata connection available and I want to know if I get a sata hard drive and connect it with this, presumabby it will then leave the ide channels free for the 3 drives, so I wont get the dvd rom drive slowing down the hard drive if i was to slave the dvd rom drive of the hd on ide channel 1, is this correct?. Ive had a look on micro direct website and it looks like u need a power adapter as well for a sata hard drive!. Or would I be better getting an ide card, not sure which way to go with this 1?

Optical drives and hard drives can exist on the same IDE Controller without a problem. The optical drive will not slow down your hard drive unless it's running in the PIO mode. Most optical drives are designed to run in the DMA Mode 2 anyway and most modern motherboards have IDE Controllers that support independent IDE timings so that each device can function at it's own speed.

Ive had a look on micro direct website and it looks like u need a power adapter as well for a sata hard driveIt depends on the make / model you get. Some sata drives have both the sata power connector & the regular ATA one. Even if you have to buy a power adaptor, they are only ~£2.

thanks black diamond 1 more question 4 u, im going to be using a lite on dvd rom drive for ripping dvds is the combi drive ie dvd rom cd rewriter ok or should i stick to the lite on dvd rom drive?. Im going to have either a lite on dvd rom or combi drive slaved off of the hd on ide 1 now. Then the pioneer 107d on ide 2 set as master.

Either the combo drive or the DVD-ROM drive will be fine for ripping. I don't think that you will see a difference in performance between the two. As for the IDE configuration this one is user's choice. I would put the hard drive and the DVD-ROM drive on one channel and the DVD burner and the combo drive on the other channel. This way neither writer's performance would be affected when writing from the hard drive.
