View Full Version : Broadband Problem On Windows XP

When I access the net I'll be on for a while, then a little yellow triangle appears in the stray saying.
"Windows System Error
there is an IP address conflict with another system on the network"
As a result I have to repair the connection and it will work for a few more minutes, then it does it again.
I have an ADSL connection with Logonix. Can someone please help with this. I am not running a network, I do not have a router, just a plain old built in ethernet adapter card with Sygate Personal Firewall running.
Thanks in advance. :)

Go into a command prompt and type ipconfig/release then ipconfig/renew see if that helps

not one to disagree but that is a bit of a workaround really Mr S :) , not a fix. It sounds like an issue with either your NIC or your ISP.
Do an IPCONFIG /all and check the lease times you are being given by your ISP. If this is set to something non-standard, i.e less than 3 days, then speal to your ISP.
also check that your TCP/IP settings are not set to a static IP and are getting the IP from your ISP's DHCP server.
make sure your firewall is not blocking repeat requests from the DHCP server, especially if you leave it connected for days at a time, although from saying a few minutes later i would say it is either your modem dropping the connection or your ISP playing around with the DHCP leases.
My advice would be to speak to your ISP, as they "should" know how their DHCP is set up.

I kind of was guessing that would be the case, but thought I would start out simple. Cause if it is a problem with the ISP, maybe a release/renew could possibly fix it.

without getting into a personal debate, god it's started already, wouldn't repairing the connection do that in effect.
my motto - why start simple when you can write a full-blown essay
