View Full Version : Burning DVD-R with UDF/ISO for xbox with Nero 6, HELP!!

Hi, today i tried to burn several divx movies onto a single DVD-R disk which sum up less than 4.37G. I have Pioneer 107 D and Ritek G04 Printable disk. But for some reason there's 1 file which has a size of 1.3Gb, stops displaying within DVD-Rom UDF folder within Xbox Media player 2.3??? Therefore, it is invisible??
Could some1 pls tell me if UDF has size restriction pls?? I.e., all files must less than 1+ Gb.
THX alot!!

XBMP 2.3?!?!- sorry dude things have moved on significantly since then- here's whats on the xbmp faq site which is valid as of the 2.4 release so most of these would apply to 2.3 and below too
Q: Why can't XboxMediaPlayer read/play files larger than 1GB from a UDF DVD-R/RW media?
A: This is due to a Xbox™ limitation reading UDF128 (this is not a XBMP issue or our fault).
More info on this limitation and what developers could get around this issue can be found here (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=780248&group_id=64793&atid=508681).
Q: Why can't XBMP read/play files after 2GB from multisession ISO 9660 DVD-R/RW media?
A: This is due to a XBMP limitation reading ISO 9660 (the code was designed for CD-R/RW).
PS! Note that this has been fixed in XBMP CVS so will be supported in the next point release.
Q: Why can't XBMP read/play AVI video files after 2GB or play read/play 2GB+ AVI video files?
A: All AVI files over 2GB in size are OpenDML AVI's and XBMP do not yet support OpenDML.
PS! Know that XBMP has also other problems with OpenDML AVI's that are under 2GB in size, (couple such problems are that XBMP cannot FF/FRDW in OpenDML, and video distortions).
Note! Reason for this is that MPlayer which XBMP is based upon do not yet support OpenDML.
Q: Why can't XboxMediaPlayer read/play files larger than 4GB from the Xbox™ hard disk drive?
A: This is due to a Xbox™ limitation in the FAT-X format (not a XBMP issue that can be fixed). Not really a limitation as the Xbox harddrive with FATX can't hold files larger than 4GB anyway.
The last cvs point release of xbmp is 2.4 was around the end of october, and there have been a few unoffical compiles since then though nothing really significant. The team have stopped developing it to concentrate on zboz media center- i personally would switch now (conveniently a new point release has been released today although its a bit tough trying to get it at the mo but should be readily available tomorrow- and xbmc 1.0 is likely to get it's release in the next couple of months tops)- i haven't come across any massive bugs plus it plays way more formats and can cope with these large file size issues that you're having probs with- and is far more feature rich too.
but if you like the look and feel of xbmp (control schme of xbmc is quite different to xbmp both on remote and controller- but you can change the keymapping quite easily) then the cvs build i mentioned does rectify most of the probs mentioned above. good luck finding it though its pretty tough to find nowadays
oh yeah and don't burn in udf/iso mode, if you have files larger than 1GB, as thats a hadware limitation of the xbox re: udf128- I burn such files in dvd iso format in nero and the playback fine on my xbox.

Hi THX alot the extensive reply. So is final solution, is to upgrade to XBMP 2.4?? Or is there further complication?? Are there any restriction on XBMP 2.4 as well pls??
THX again.

errr.... as i said the last cvs build of xbmp 2.4 came out sometime late october- the official release of 2.4 was about 4-5 months before that but still hadn't resolved some of the issues you were having probs with- some of those things have been rectified in the last point release
do you tick the box for for the xbox when burning your udf/iso format discs? if not chances are none of the discs you burned like this will work and neither will any files >4GB cos these are both limitations of the xbox- and nothing team xbmp/xbmc do will resolve it- as a general rule i tend to never merge those avi files that fit on cd (the ones around 700mb) for this reason, and besides both xbmp and xbmc have a "file stack" option so that provided the two (or more) parts of the filem are labelled "movie-CD1.avi", "movie-CD2.avi" etc, it'll play them consecutively. similarly creating a video playlist also does the same thing
you could if you have have a network connection to your xbox from your pc- set up a share and place the disc(s) in your pc drive and stream it from there. I wrote a small tutorial on samba share to get this set up for both xbmp and xbmc which is in the faq/tutorials sticky at the top of this board. (i dunno if xbmp 2.3 even had samba support but the last build i know does)

THX again for the reply. I read your replies thoroughly, and i came with the conclusion that even with the upgrade to XBMP 2.4 (October 2003 edition) will not eliminate the Xbox UDF128 limitation (1Gb file limitation as the reason is due to xbox hardware, which cannot resolve the UDF 128 prob even using a modified software, ie latest XBMP/XBMC {I may be wrong on this?}).
I have wasted 7 DVD-R yesterday, testing all different ways of burning to see if the single 1.3Gb divx movie will play, and i here's the results:
Nero 6.3.xx
DVD UDF/ISO - won't work in xbox
DVD ISO - will work (like you said "NImbles")
My main interest is to burn UDF/ISO format as, it seem that xbox like UDF more than ISO?? Don't know why? And ofcourse with force xbox box ticked, again like "Nimbles" suggested. The reason to use UDF/ISO format is that i wanted to fit several divx movies onto a single DVD-R. And it seem that all movies will ONLY play correctly via UDF, again don't know why??
I think from now on, i am going keep my divx files less than 1Gb by not merging multiple avi files and played with XBMP 2.3 via creating playlist. I think this is my end solution.
THX again Nimbles for your guide.
:wavey:
PS: You would think that with DVD Drive that came with a xbox, would have a restriction 4.37Gb, so WHY 1Gb and 2Gb on video/data sizes??? 4Gb size i understand due to FAT.

it seem that xbox like UDF more than ISO??
I have several dvd's with 6x 700mb avi's burned in dvd iso format and they all play fine on xbmc and on the last cvs build of xbmp2.4- the official xbmp2.4 release and i'm guessing previous versions like yours had a 2gb iso9660 limit, which meant only the the first 2 or 3 movie avi's could be read off a disc burnt in iso9660 format, but i can confirm that had been rectified by the cvs build that came out around august last year (and obviously subsequent releases too)- so you can fill a dvd-r with movies and provided none are massive (stick to 1gb or less as a rule of thumb but i'm not 100% sure what the limit is) you can play them all the way up to the 4.37 gb limit.
strangely my dvdrom drive in my pc doesn't like the udf only format so i've always just burned it as a dvd iso9660 format and never had any problems- If you look at proper dvd's (that play in standalone dvd players) they never have files larger than 1GB, movies larger than 1GB are always split into multiple vobs each of 1gb- and if you look at any xbox game there is never a file more than 1gb so i'm guessing there is a significant reason for it
I think from now on, i am going keep my divx files less than 1Gb by not merging multiple avi files and played with XBMP 2.3 via creating playlist. I think this is my end solution.
p.s. i would definietly recommend at very least updating to the last xbmp but even more so trying out xbmc: you won't be disappointed ;)- its basically the only reason i use my xbox now :D

Hi Nimbles, THX again for the reply. You absolutely right, the reason i stated in my previous reply "...1gb & 2gb restriction", I was thinking of xbox iso files for games which usually have size of upto 4Gb+...if we burnt these iso files and examine the individual files within, we can see that they don't have any files larger than 1gb. The same apply to vob files within retail releases of dvds...now i understand.
Q: You mentioned that there are 2 version of XBMP 2.4 (May & Oct 2003), is there a way of telling which version you have??
Q2: (Silly question) Can i have XBMP & XBMC installed on my xbox??
Q3: (DivX DVD standalone DVD players) I am think of buying 1 of these dvd player very shortly, because i usually burnt my multi-divx dvd-r discs with multi-session selected & within UDF/ISO format to be play on xbox. Do you think i will have problem playing these disks?? I have read somewhere that these dvd players doesn't play multi-session disks?? May be it all depends on each players?? My General question is, Are there major differences between playing Multi-divx on xbox and DivX stdalone dvd players???
THX again.
nimbles

q1: i think with xbmp you may be able to tell- on the default skin it tells you what version you are running- but normally the rar file you get containing the folder is usually labelled xbmp-23-10-2004 or something like that- so the date is normally in the title
q2: absolutely, i have both installed and slowly have migrated from xbmp to xbmc, i probably should delete it but in the big scheme of things the xbmp folder is tiny compared to xbox games- i don't think i've used xbmp for a long time now- when i have had problems with avi's usually the problems persist if not appear worse aon xbmp compared toxbmc and it turns out that the avi file itself is badly constructed or video/audio is badly encoded, which 99% of the time can be rectified with something like vdubmod- be sure that when updating the build you go to the game saves section in the M$ xbox dash and delete the xbmp gamesave as settings stored there don't port properly when changing the build- a new game save is created when you open first start the new build
q3: not sure on this one, as i see no reason to bother getting a standalone player- xbmc can handle far far more than any of the new divx player (stuff like ogg media files, matroska files, quicktime mov files, real player video, wmv, shoutcast if you have internet connection- plus if your house is networked you can play your movies/music from any of your pc's on the network- as far as i know only a couple of the high end kiss media players have that feature (streaming media) but they're in hot water over the copyright infringements pertaining to their mpeg4 decoding chip). the multi session thing was more to do with standalone dvd players, but it could cause a problem with the standalone divx players as well i suppose, best bet would be asking the question over at the dvd forum.
:eek: i'm sounding like a major xbmc fan boy, i'll stop now :D

Hi Nimbles, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. For last few hrs i've been trying figure out how use your samba guide with my xbmp 2.3. I still don't know what iam doing wrong. Anyway, would u mind have a look at my config.xml file which is listed below. Pls adjust what is need to play music & movies from my pc dvd-rom drive to my xbox please. I hope u don't mind sorting this out for me, THanks again for all replies.:beer:
PC Ref Details:
Workgroup = TECHNO LABS LTD

Xbox Ref Details:
IP address = 192.168.0.2
IP Gateway = 192.168.0.1
FlashFXP: In order for me ftp to my xbox, i have to changemy IP addr to 192.168.0.1 on my pc. Hence leaving IP gateway as it is as both system are connected to a router.
Could you u take time to explain your action pls as i am a newbie at this, and may be with your guidelines, newbies like me will get a clearer picture of samba.
I guessed after the modification of the CONFIG.xml file, and i wanted run sambo mode, i have to change my PC ip addr to 192.168.0.1 as if i wanted ftp to my xbox, is this the correct procedure?

Ok i'm not sure how different the samba protocol was back then a few things strike me as being possible causes:
I'm pretty sure that workgroup name and your computer name are possibly causes for the problems.
M$ recommends that computer and workgroup names are 16 characters or below, and only take A-Z,0-9 and hyphens, so "_" and spaces, may be causing the problems. (rules a relaxed alot on xp but win98 and 2000 machines may have probs so i'm assuming that linux may have probs too)
I'm a little confused about your ip set up- you say you're using a router? If so is it dhcp enabled? If so I'd change your ip settings to the followings (noting the *)
<address*>192.168.1.2</address*>
<subnet*>255.255.255.0</subnet*>
<gateway*>192.168.1.1</gateway*>
<nameserver>192.168.7.1</nameserver>
I'm pretty sure the nameserver is supposed to match up with the default gateway for the network, usually, the ip of the router, i'm assuming thats 192.168.7.1
to get dhcp working on avalaunch or evox:
avalaunch:
<network setup="1" type="dhcp">
<ip>
192.168.2.14 (router assigns it- and this value is ignored if dhcp is enabled)
</ip>
<subnet>
255.255.255.0
</subnet>
<gateway>
192.168.7.1
</gateway>
<dns1>
192.168.7.1
</dns1>
<dns2>
192.168.7.1
</dns2>
<!--Proxy Server
If disabled the server and port settings will be ignored-->
<proxy enabled="0">
<server>
10.0.0.1
</server>
<port>
8080
</port>
</proxy>
</network>
for evox go into the settings menus and switch from "static" to "dhcp", and change Defaultgateway, and both DNS vlaues to the ip of the router (192.168.7.1- i think)
lastly, what software firewall if any do you use? I use f-secure, and in there had to manually allow smb/smaba sharing (amongst other things) over the home network, most firewalls i've used aren't that specific usually if you allow your network range (say 192.168.7.1-192.168.7.100) to be "trusted" in zonealarm then that usally works, also make sure the windows firewall is either disabled or configured to allow access to you computer from other pc's/xbox on the network. XP doesn't like the router approach to home netowrking and internet access and if you set it up through the home network wizard, it enables the firewall by default.
But i would say put the new version of xbmp in first as i didn't even have my xbox when 2.3 was out, so i have no idea as to whether there were any changes in how samba was configued back then- i dunno if it was even that stable pre 2.4.

Hi Nimbles, I have sucessfully enable DHCP on my router and now my xbox show "DHCP" type, and it auto assign an ip addr for my xbox.
So here are the details:
Workgroup: TECHNOLABSLTD
Computer Name: ZeroAceCool
{{Are these case sensitives???}}
XBOX IP addr: 192.168.7.4
Gateway, DNS 1 & DNS 2: 192 168.7.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
My PC Ip addr: 192.168.7.2
Gateway: 192.168.7.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
I think i have everything you mentioned above upto the point you started to mentioned about firewall. My router has firewall builtin, do i need open certain port, and do i need 2 set port forwarding???
I am little confused about editing the CONFIG.xml file within XBMP, here's what think you meant when u wrote the FAQ, pls correct me if iam wrong at any stage:
<share>
<name>Movies on My Computer</name>
<url>smb://TECHNOLABSLTD/ZeroAceCool/Movie Videos</url>
<cachesize>8192</cachesize>
</share>
TECHNOLABSLTD: Workgroup
ZeroAceCool: Computer name
Movie Videos: Shared folder's name on PC, should these folders located @ C:\ or anywhere on PC??
NB: Are these letter case sensitive???
I also want to shared my PC DVD-Rom drive, i am not sure what & where to the samba code within CONFIG.xml?? Pls help.
{{{Here's what i did: I put the following lines in APPLICATION bookmarks area, dunno if this the correct way to do it??
<bookmark>
<name>DVD-Rom Drive on PC</name>
<path>smb://TECHNOLABSLTD/ZeroAceCool/DVD</path>
</bookmark>
}}}
When goto XBMP, the "DVD-Rom Drive on PC" does not shows??
That's all i have edited the CONFIG.xml file for XBMP2.3, i know you have encourage me to move to XBMP 2.4, I will do shortly. But i want to see if this Samba code really does work and how good it is. Cauze i haven't got XBMP 2.4 yet, waiting for m8 to get it for me, just want 2 see if it work on XBMP2.3.
Pls note I only edited 2 smb codes: one for "MOVIE VIDEOS " folder and the other for the PC DVD-Rom drive.
Therefore could you check if i have done evrything correctly, THX alot.

Hi again, i forgot to mentioned about the IP addr setting within CONFIG.xml:
You quoted:

I'm pretty sure the nameserver is supposed to match up with the default gateway for the network, usually, the ip of the router, i'm assuming thats 192.168.7.1
Here's what my CONFIG.XML looks like, are the ip setting correct pls??

Glad you got it working js2000.
When you make a folder (or Drive) shared in 2000 or XP you have to give it a shared name (the dialog box that comes up at the bottom of the sharing tab in properties). by default the 2000/XP gives it the same name as the actual folder/drvie name but you can rename it.
The examples I gave in the tutorial are the ones i use not what works "straight out of the box"
hope that clears it up

Hi Nimbles, yeah last nite i manged to get a copy XBMC and that's how i got it to work. With my old XBMP 2.3, strangely i can view all files within the shared folder on my pc, but when i want play the file, it won't bulge?? I guessed xbmp 2.3 is not compatible with samba coding?
It seem i still need xbmp, because it allow me to play UDF/ISO straight from my xbox Pc dvd-rom drive (Upto now i still have/use a swap ext DVD-rom drive, cause i git philips xbox dvd and it's crap.). May now i can closed my xbox casing and use the philips drive as i can shared a DVD-rom drive from my pc using the samba method.
Q: It seem u can't play UDF/ISO files from disc within the swap ext dvd-rom drive within XBMC, tried it today and keeps saying the dvd-rom drive is empty?? May be it is detecting the philitp drive instead of the ext dvd drive?
Just been to xbox-scene, bad news for XBMP - it is discontinued.

04-21-2004, 01:38 PM
yes there is a difference in the way xbmc checks the dvdrom drive to see if there's a disc in it. I haven't done this myself (i have a samsung drive :p) but if you can be bothered there is a solution- but best to ask over at the xbmc site if you get stuck on it:
I hope this new "disc checking" feature can be corrected soon to accomodate those who use a non-modded PC DVD drive. Meanwhile here is hardware work around:
Referring to the pinouts of the diagram in this document:
hxxp://dwl.xbox-scene.net/%7Exbox/xbox-scene/tutorials/samsung3.pdf
*edit* xb-scene doesn't like links to it- copy and paste the link in and swap the xx for tt
Use tiny wire (wire-wrap wire works great) to connect
1. pin 3 to pin 8 (force Tray In = True)
2. pin 10 to pin 12 (force Disc Ready = True)
Note: Make sure you reverse the pin numbers if you choose to work on the motherboard side of the connector
Just been to xbox-scene, bad news for XBMP - it is discontinued
well its not been really updated properly since last year really- but yeah sad to see it go
