I've borrowed a CD from a friend which contains the full beatles discography (i.e. each track for each album). It contains a program from which you can select any album & play the tracks complete with lyrics. Very neat indeed but I'm wondering what format the songs are. If you explore the CD each album is contained in a WAV file which I can open in Adobe Audition, but the WAV file is way too small to be uncompressed (e.g. Sgt Peppers is only 52mb). If I look at the track properties in explorer it says that properties summary is unavailable. Any ideas on what they used to compress the audio?

You will probably find that the wav files are not compressed but are a very low bitrate and if i remember correctly a lot of the files on that disc are done in mono - so you can fit more into the files. although i could also be very wrong! :D

If it were 8bit 22KHz mono then 52MB's (if I did not screw up) would represent 43.3mins. Why not just check the properties when you have it open in Audition?

Thanks for the advice. Audition says that the files are 22khz 16bit mono or stereo. They sound OK off the PC & it's a very neat package. Dunno where the disc came from originally & whether it's legit but it's still a good one for the archives anyway.
