Are you using the trial version of Nero ?

If so it seems to be the problem.

Solution = get the full version as stated in the error message :saywhat:

Or use another program to burn with, though I have to say that personally I always come back to Nero :)

You are using Nero Express .... you need Nero Vision Express .... it's a seperate download at Nero's website :

http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/nero-up.php

You need Update Package 2

Nero MPEG 2 and 4 decoding & encoding are only available with a retail version. The trial and OEM versions can't read and write those files. Hint: Either download the MPEG-2/MPEG-4 plug-ins (not free) or get a working (retail) key. :)

PhilEnfield

Yep .... just to clarify, you must have a retail version of Nero 6, if you want to use Nero Vision Express. Also Nero Vision Express will enable you to convert the avi to DVD, (complete with menu & chapters, if you wish) .... I assume this is what you are trying to do.

Nero should burn an SVCD alright, If you have problems with Nerovision try burning it with Nero, but as said you will need the full version.

Van Nugent

Without a full-version key, the Nero suite can only encode & decode MPEG-1 (VCD, SVCD) but it can't read and write MPEG-2 & MPEG-4 (AVI included) so in this case, Nero Burning ROM wouldn't work either even to make VCD/SVCD from the AVI file. It seems to me that he somehow did have a retail key but he didn't author the DVD properly.

hey guys.

as far as i am aware i now have the full version...
how do i check though?

i just burned a disc with nothing fancy (menu etc)
using nero vision express 2.

it bruned fine, and when put in the DVD player it just comes up with a white screen and a small black box in the middle.

when the disc was burning it was showing the video in fast play whilst i was waiting.

all i want to do is burn this to CD and watch on tv...

am i being REALLY stupid?

In Nero Vision Express, try burning to the Hard Drive, instead of to disk and see if your creation plays ok on the PC.
If all is ok, try burning to disk with Nero Burning Rom.

Silly question maybe, but does your standalone player definitely suppord VCD/SVCDs ?

If no luck, Why not convert and burn to DVD

PhilEnfield

OK if it's already on the HDD, can you play it ok on the PC ?
Just to clarify ... this has been converted to VCD yeah ?

ok .... can I ask first, why you are trying to convert it to VCD and not DVD, as the quality of this avi is very high and would make a great DVD.

aboveconnection
02-19-2007, 06:22 AM
well, thats one of about 20 i need to burn.
not all of them are HD.

there was no reason, except it will prob be cheaper, because ill watch it once, then give it away

unless i can put several of them on one DVD?
is that poss even if they are seperate avi files?

another here

PhilEnfield

Yes you can fit 2 on a DVD with A1 quality .... you will get awy with 3 with a bit of compression, which is done automatically in NVE.

Just drag the avis into the first window and follow the wizard.

I cant say I have done much with VCDs as the quality is a bit poo.

Give it a go and post back if u get stuck, but it's dead simple ... trust me ;)

ok cool.
so i open up nero express 2 and then click make cd >video cd ?

or what option do i choose?

PhilEnfield
02-19-2007, 06:41 AM
No Make DVD/DVD-Video, then drag each avi into the window or navigate using 'Add Video Files', if you add more than 2, it will ask you if you wnt to compress or not, just follow the wizard.

You will get a chance to go back, if you mess up and you can preview your creation, before burning it.

You can either choose to burn to Disk or to a Hard Drive location ... just read each page of the Wizard carefully.

looks like im getting results.
i entered another number, and the menu as you described above is there.

but its saying 3hours to burn,
that cant be right?
is it because its previewing it too?
can i turn that off?

PhilEnfield
02-19-2007, 10:56 AM
It can take a while to convert and burn ..... I'm using an AMD 3400+ and an average time is around 1 hr 50mins for me.

aboveconnection
02-19-2007, 05:31 PM
just thought was long!
no faster way?

in the end, it took over 6 hours, although i think it froze at the end.
it previews the films too.

is there a faster way?

Van Nugent
02-19-2007, 05:52 PM
It will take a long time to encode AVI to VCD-compliant mpeg1. To save time, you'll need more RAM and, if possible, a faster processor.

Enabling SmartEncoding and switching to 1 pass encoding will save some time if you make a DVD from AVI but not much when making VCD's.

PhilEnfield
02-19-2007, 06:11 PM
Nope ....... there isn't a faster way really, as Van says, although 6 hours does seem a bit excessive. What were you converting ... i.e. how many episodes ? VCD or DVD ?

What are your system specs ?

If you burn VCD's, it would be easier to use Nero Burning ROM/Nero Express than NVE or Nero Vision.
