personally i'm waiting till proper vista pc's are about with all the hardware built specifically.
at the mo i doubt anyone will get 100% out of it with their current hardware, bit like asking a psx to play ps2 games.

If you use a "bogus CD Key" then chances are that you will not be able to achieve "Activation", so it would be time limited. There are activation cracks across the Internet but it appears that Microsoft has "set up" the hackers for this.

Microsoft have just posted a Windows Vista Genuine Validation Update (KB929391) to Windows Update. The update provides the latest information to the Windows Vista validation components, and is marked as an "Important" update.

It seems that the aim of the update is to further prevent "cracked" copies of Windows Vista from being able to run. Install the Windows Vista validation component updates to make sure that your copy of Windows Vista is genuine and is correctly licensed. If a problem is detected, the update will provide additional instructions.

An example of this is evident in this thread....

simple answer, NO

there are terms and conditions on all websites that are offering this and you need to phone your info to an M$ activation center making your bogus copy of xp inelligible for upgrade to vista.

Why would you want to use it without first running the software/HW compatibility wizard?

Why would you want to use it?

A question that millions of Windows users have asked time after time on every upgrade!

I'm delighted there are happy users out there but given the installion size coupled with the new hardware requirements I'll not be upgrading anytime soon.

Strange coincidence Mr G is off to spend his life doing philanthropic work very soon ;)

If people want to play around with a new O/S because they are bored with XP then simply install Ubuntu to another partition and try that out. Trust me, you will have waaaaaay more fun than using Vista and after you've learned it's capabilities you will probably change from using Windoze as your main O/S.
