OE doesnt always crash and burn, I use it daily on about 5 computers and have hundreds of customers on it also.
If it crashes, it could be your DBX files are damaged or corrupted, you could try repairing the folders, if not, save a copy of all DBX to a new backup folder, delete all current DBX files and start Outlook Express again, it will recreate all the blank DBX, just re-import the saved messages normally fix the problem.
As to alternative, Thunderbird is very good, Eudora has long followers, or even Outlook 2003..

theres no dbx files in my outlook express folder - is that where i should be looking?

NO .......... You can find the path to the dbx files by opening OE "Options/Maintenance/Store Folder".
I believe the default folder path is :
C:\Documents and Settings\(UserName)\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{BF60CF09-3F9F-4347-A334-634A2DAD0880}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.
Assuming that C is the drive OE is installed on.
HTH.
Or if you have office installed (like most people) you could just use outlook or Thunderbird. I agree OE shouldn't really be crashing though.
