Windows update prompted me to install IE7 and I declined, but now the update icon in my taskbar won't go away. Even if I click on it and tell it to install updates, the update icon still stays there. Is anyone else having this issue?

Just go in the control panel to the security center and disable updates.

This may help : http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/10/how-to-block-ie-7-from-auto-installing.html
If you don't want to disable automatic updates or use the patch in PhilEnfields link, go to the Microsoft update page and select custom, when the available updates show expand the details and tick the box that says "Don't show this update again".

Actually, it doesn't appear to be the IE7 update causing the problem. It is the high priority update "Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980)" that appears to be stuck. I have told Windows to install it multiple times and have restarted my computer, but it's not getting installed.
