Did I dream this or is there a firmware proggy...

Im sure ive seen a program which views 360 firmware files and patches them to change the drive type...

Ie you put a hitachi key in a samsung so you patch the firmware to look like a hitachi vx.x so you dont get caught out by the update?

Firmware Toolbox patches keys but not versions. I'd expect the next release of it to patch versions.

The program that comes with Xtreme 4.2 patches the version from the drive you're modding into the hacked firmware.

Other than that I haven't seen anything that does it.

do it manually under a hexeditor.

dump firm
decrypt
swap key ( i [resume its to replace a drive)
edit out the versions number using a hexed :-

save firmware
recrypt

either repatch the relevant locations or reprog the whole firmware to your chip and resolder,
