Hi all, just bought a DVD RW (Lite-on SOHW-812S) drive, I've never had one before, can anybody tell me what software (or other things) I'm going to need so that I can back-up my DVD collection?
Thanks in advance,
Steeve.

Im assuming you mean a DVDwriter and not a DVDdrive, Anyhow all you need is the latest versions of both DVDshrink & DVDdecrypter, these are both freeware, Just set DVDshrink to output in ISO and decrypter will burn it for you.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yep, I did mean writer (Lite on SOHW-812S) I had just found the tutorials and was having a read at them, I hadn't seen them. I'm off to give it a go. I want to try to copy Il Padrino (The Godfather)

If you want to keep things super simple, get a little program called DVD Shrink. It is super easy to use with decent results.

Will DVD shrink do everything for me? I've just downloaded it by the way.

Ha ha ha very funny, however not very mature, you obviously can't read either.
I had just found the tutorials and was having a read at them, I hadn't seen them. Will DVD shrink do everything for me? I've just downloaded it by the way.
I thought this forum was to provide help, not to take cheap shots at people with less knowledge than yourself. Perhaps you'd like to post a more helpful reply?

It is to provide help m8, and as i said, if you read what id wrote above you wouldn't have to ask again, My answer for the 2nd time is get the latest versions of both DVDshrink & DVDdecrypter, Once installed set the ouput type in DVDshrink to ISO and DVDdecrypter will burn it for you.

The forum is a help forum, yes. But part of that is taking some initiative and having a look around before posting.
Also if I recall correctly, I moved this from the media forum to here.

I did have a look around. If you have a look around, you'll see that the links to the tutorials are to old versions, (at least the DVD shrink one is) therefore it bears no resemblence to the latest version I downloaded.
And, so what if I posted in the wrong forum and you moved it, I made a mistake. I'm sorry.
Now, if anybody has any help or advice I'd really appreciate it.
Che palle!

Its pretty self explanatory but here's a guide for 3.1x
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm
Maybe this can be added in the dvd tutorials?
Stevie boy- try doom9 (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm) also in future- there's a wealth of knowledge on the site from the simple one click solutions to the more complicated (but better qualitywise-IMHO) solutions

Thanks Nimbles, I appreciate your help. It can be so frustrating at times.
I'll give an update;
Using DVD decrypter I can manage to copy the disc to a folder on my hard drive.
Then I've been using DVD shrink & using the re-author option I can browse to the said folder. That's when it gets a bit tricky.
I add the file I want to copy to disc, it's at that point it gets a bit fuzzy for me. I'm not sure exactly what the next step is.
If I click the back up button, it asks me to select a target device and suggests a folder called "hard disc folder".
Anyway, It's about there that I get confused.

target device is either a dvd-writer (think you need nero installed for that to work) or the hard disc which means the transcoded files are saved to the hard drive which you can then burn with the burning app of your choice.
I'd choose the hard drive choice- create folder for where you want it to be saved

Theres no need to use DVDdecrypter to ripp the files to your HDD, DVD Shrink does all that, Just set the output to ISO in DVDshrink and then you burn the outputed file using DVDdecrypter which is done by selecting Mode/ISO/Write. This is the 3rd time iv'e tried explaining this. If your stuck tell us where rather than repeating the same questions.
If your still having trouble, Try downloading the trial verson of cloneDVD and give that a try, It does everything for you. You can get an evaluation copy from the below link.

Thanks again, I'll give that a try. I was trying to follow the instructions in one of the tutorials. It seems to say, use DVD decrypter then Shrink, maybe that's where I was going wrong. I don't want this to beat me, and I don't have to do it,I just want to know that I can.

The tutorial (I hope Lazza will forgive me) is more than a little outdated. If you notice it says DVD Shrink V2.3. The last time I checked, the current version is 3.1.7. There are a number of newer features that have been added to the program since 2.3. Some people feel it is necessary to do the process with DVD Decrypter first because it has a better Decrypter in it. I have yet to find this to be true. On the select few films that I have run into problems, I have tried both programs and both have failed. Anyways don't bother using it to decrypt. Just use it for the output (ISO) option to burn your DVD Shink projects to disc.

Firstly thanks to everybody for being so patient with me but, I still can't get this to work.
Using DVD decrypter, I can copy it to a folder but, when I try to burn the disc, the open files dialogue box opens, if I select "all files**" from the drop down menu,I can see all the files but, I can only select them one at atime and I get an error message saying; invalid or unsupported image file format.
Where am I going wrong?

Use File: ISO read
Then ISO Write instead assuming this is a dvd5.

I've been using ISO read and write and seem to be making progress but, now when I click the burn button, I get the following error message;
There doesn't seem to be enough space on the disc to burn this image. Would you like to continue anyway?
This is the fil I want to back up

I don't know the size of the movie you're trying to back up but you can't just use DVD Decrypter for a movie over 4.38GB,you'll have to compress it first using DVD Shrink.
geobon has explained the easiest way mate by just using DVD Decrypter to burn and letting DVD Shrink do the rest.
I'm no expert but post back and i'll try and help you if i can.

Thanks for that, it's doing my head in. I can't find the setting for output in ISO in Shrink, so that won't be helping.
Things are easy when you can do them. I think my signature is quite appropriate in this case.

Is it a DVD-9 movie (over 4.38GB)you're trying to copy ?
Stevie boy

I don't know what type it is, (how will I find out?) but if it's any help it looks like it's about 8Gb, is that normal?

Ok,open DVD shrink and then click on 'open disc'.
Select the drive from the drop down that has the original DVD in and click ok.
DVD Shrink will start analysing the disk.
Let me know when you've done that and i tell you the next bit.

if Shrink has analised the disk as i explained it should now tell you to the right of the screen (under the compression settings tab) the compression percentage needed to fit the movie onto a DVDR.
Post back telling me what the percentage is

It's till analysing it, it says it's going to take 30 mins.
leadan
04-17-2004, 05:25 PM
Hmm,initial analysis should only take a couple of minutes unless you've clicked on 'analysis' and are doing a deep analysis which can take around 30 minutes.
Anyway when its finished you need to decide if you're going to just copy the main movie or the whole disk with all the extras included, but deciding this depends on what the comression is and what standard of quality you want.
Stevie boy

You're right, it is deep analysing, that's the only analysing option there seems to be. I've had to stop it as I have to be up very early tomorrow(what a bummer). Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. I'm going to keep at it.
Steeve.

You don't need to click on 'analysis' at this point you just let Shrink do it by itself when you've opened and selected the relevant disk as i explained "open DVD shrink and then click on 'open disc'.
Select the drive from the drop down that has the original DVD in and click ok.
DVD Shrink will start analysing the disk".
