Hi everyone,
I dont know how it happened but i recently just got my new internet provider (Tiscali), and ever since i hooked it up to the internet, i got a virus somehow for the first time in my life even thou Avast was working:bawling: ! Then it later on told me that Avast had now got a virus within itself and now anytime i do virus checks, the viruses found on my pc will not go "to the chest" of Avast!! I dont know what to do because i love Avast and has been brilliant previously.....
All help will be madly appreciated!!
My computer has now slowed right down to the very bottem!! Thinking of just gettin Norton but friends have been telling me that it completely slows down your computer by taking half of the memory...
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

take a note of the virus and do a search on the internet, there will most likely be a removal tool or instructions to remove it properly, Just to add sounds more like a firewall issue than an antivirus issue, you mention avast but do you have a firewall installed to prevent anything accessing your pc? something like sygate or simular.

if you havent got a firewall running you will pick up hundreds of viruses & spyware as soon as you go on line... go to the link below & do an on line scan with panda... also if your running windows xp sp2 make sure the built in firewall is turned on...

You still got to be careful.
I got a bug that has got through AVG & avast and with Sygate fire wall two days ago and I am still trying to get rid of the damm thing.
I run spybot & adaware it gets passed them too.
Ever wonder how these viruse writers get off on how much hassel they cause...????

i know, it is so true.......all the kits we use and still they manage to actually get through all the pracautions we take to stop them from getting through. Its so annoying especailly when you are using a known antivirus such as AVAST Which is now recommended not to be used........
To be honest m8 I've never seen anyone talk bad about Avast, the fact that a virus may have got through means very little as no antivirus program is infallible, even if you had every antivirus program known to mankind installed you would still be at risk, hence the need for a good firewall ;)

So what do you suggest Ken because I was using Avast for quite a while and was very proud to be an owner of the software but now, i disrespect because it caught a virus...Huummm very interesting because you just wonder how even with a decent firewall.....viruses get through still....like mine for example........:suspic:

Well ..... they get through in a number of ways .......
- No Firewall
- installing cracked software
- infected attachments
- out of date AV pattern files
- scripts from dodgy websites
etc. etc.
Ther will always be the odd one that gets through, even if you have Auto Updates on your AV. Especially as detection on certain big namws, is nort always brilliant.
NOD32 AV and Outpost Firewall are both highly rated and are probably a cut above the resr, but ..... nothing is 100% ;)
SpywareBlaster is a good preventative proggy too .... well worth installing .... blocks known dodgy sites.

If there was a limited amount of viruses and everyone was aware of them obviously it would be reasonable to expect every anti-virus program to catch them, unfortunately it's a sad indictment of our society's that there are people out there who seem to enjoy writing and spreading new viruses, so I'm afraid that it's unlikely that any anti-virus program will ever be 100% on top of the job this is the reason that most anti-virus software these days can be set to look for code that looks like a new virus (heuristics I believe it's called).
BTW over the past few days I've been trying NOD32 as mentioned by PhilEnfield and have to say it seems really good, It hasn't found any viruses on my computer yet but that's the way I like it ;)

Humm NOD32......I will have a look at that asap.....But as you said..i guess AVAST is obviously not as bad as i said...it just was getting on my nerves at the time...And as Phil says....there are always goin to be the odd ones from things you open or from attachments.
I will take a look,.....Just thinking right now is it actually worth uninstalling norton asap to install AVAST again?
Reason being is because norton has slowed down my computer quite a bit...

Where have I heard that before ........... ;)
I haven't used NAV for about two or three years but that was the reason that I got rid of It, If NAV is slowing your computer down I can't see any reason not to go back to Avast, but I would make sure the "On Access Protection" and automatic updates are running.
Good luck.

One tip, if you remove it ..... dont rely on Control Panel to do the job, as it will leave lots of junk around, which will still compromise your PC.
Go here and use the Norton Removal Tool : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
This will clear up all the crap that Norton installs.
