v78 Hitachi - Got One - Need Help

ok so i bought a 360 premium from argos yesterdday, took it apart, found i have the hitachi 0078 - crap

so goto a different argos today, take it back get a replacement, lol i end up with another one manufactered on the very same day, havent opened it up, but since its exact same date, got from same town, i guess it has to be a v78

Few questions i have about it:

1) ive read modding it you have to remove a chip, my guess is that it makes it 100% clear to MS, totally invalidating your warranty if you ever have to send it back

2) How much more expensive will it be to be modded at a estimate?

3) Can i simply take a v46 (or even a samsung) out of another xbox firmware change and put it in my xbox ?? or can it not be done so simple. (can i buy one off ebay n do this?)

4) after time of imrpoving the firmware and methods, will it be as simple as firmwaring a v46?? Ie not having to program the chip

1) no doubt, but many people have returned 360's in worse stares.

2) At present I'm not aware of anyone actually offering the service.

3) You need to extract the key from your drive to flash any replacement. At the moment the only way to get the key is to desolder the chip..... if you can desolder the chip you can flash it yourself and you don't need a replacement.

4) How long is a piece of string? It's been stated that there isn't currently the software (either Dos for like the Sammy or Windows for like the Hitachi) to even physically extract the f/w (yet) so anything at this point is pure speculation.

I will be doing these from next week but have no idea what i will be charging as I will do acouple first to see how long they take etc.

With reference to your second new xbox with same date,it may have a different drive,its very possible.

i got one in woolsworths hitachi drive but i havent open it to look at the numbers on the drive, on the back of my 360 it says the MFR DATE is 2006-02-27 can this date tell weather have this 0078 hitachi drive? as someone told me its only xboxes that were made after october 2006, this date on mine is way back. even tho i only brought it in woolworths 2days ago new.

yours is not one but the 0078 can go back as far as June 06!

World cup packs will all be leftover unsold stock from months ago, so they won't have the new drive in. You do end up paying about £40 extra for Fifa 06 and a world cup faceplate though.

thanks phone guy, i thought it was odd why i had a old one from way back the guy in the shop just pick the last one off the shelf behind him, i said is that the last one u got left, he said we got more upstairs, i figured to myself best just get the one thats been left rotting on the shelf behind the till, as the one upstairs maybe new stock that i would be better off staying clear of, im kind of glad its a hitachi now and not samsung as i wanted because the hitachi is easy to flash with the x360 and blaster360 as the samsung wont work for the x360 usb nor i dont think for the blaster 360 when its out, so the drive to get in my opion has now changed definitly hitachi over samsung. just as long as its a hitachi before the 0078 one as i wouldent want a 0078 one even if they could be flashed as i wouldent want a chip desoldered removed from it in order to play back ups like the hackers are saying they need to do in order to get that drive playing back ups. having said that if that was the only drive well i couldent care less if a chip had to be removed ill take it so i could play back ups, as there is a choice at the moment ill stick with the old hitachi drives and avoid samsung and new hitachi drives, if ever i was to buy another 360.

wizz001: it depends when your 360 was made. there's a manufacturing date on the label on the back. if it's after June 06 then there is a chance of it being the 78 drive.

1stly what drive is it mate?
hitachi is red cross

samsung is green tick

my guess is v78s were rare in june 06, but no real way of telling without opening it up!

Unlikely that it will have a v78. My guess is it's a v59 which is easily modded with the current firmware patcher.
