Xbox 360 Mod

My friend has an existing Xbox 360 that he would like to modify to play backups. However, he doesn't want to send it in or have a chip soldered in it. Can someone explain what "flashing" is? Is there a way to play backups without having to install a mod chip?

I didn't bother trying to flash my drive myself but once i looked on the net and found a few tutorials about taking apart my 360 myself i removed my dvd drive and just sent that to get flashed and must say i was happy with the result. If you want e-mail me and i will explain what i know to you and get your friend started.
