Hi Guys,

I am looking into buying a new monitor but have found the connector stuff a little confusing. Its primarily for my laptop but will be using it with a new desktop in the future. So I want something with DVI as its the new fangled future right?
My laptop has a 15 pin monitor connector so its a vga connector right? And can I get a cable that will fit the laptops vga port and a dvi port on a monitor?
And am I right in saying D-Sub means the monitor will have a dvi and a vga (analogue) port?
The monitor I am looking at is the HannsG HW191D. Its a 19" widescreen that seems cheap enough. Can be found here:

Any thoughts on the monitor? And will it fit my laptop?

Thanks in advance,

Yoshi

Got to say Im not entirely sure what is meant by d-sub, I always thought it was the name of the analogue VGA connector

Anyway, all you need to connect the DVI monitor to your laptop is a converter that will convert to analogue, they are only a few quid

But more than likely that monitor will have both anyway

A sub-d is any connector with 2 long parallel sides & 2 angled ones like a vga connector or a serial...
If you only have a sub-d 15pin connector (in 3 rows) then this is an analogue vga connector and you can't connect it to a DVI input. You will need to get a monitor with analogue input.
Never seen a vga to dvi convertor, dvi-vga are common as dvi-i connectors include a analogue connection

A simpler explanation is that a Sub-D is any connector that's shaped like the letter D when viewed from the end.
...Sub-D VGA, Sub-D Serial, Sub-D Parallel, Sub-D SCSI.
