is it possible, as an administrator of the computer, or by using a program/software tool/reg edit to prevent users of the same computer from deleting their history?
i know its possible to prevent users from going into "tools" then "internet options" by using spybot S&D. its also possible to remove the IE "history" tab from the toolsbar by right clicking and choosing "customize" (but users can easily bring tht back).
is it possible to prevent users from changing settings on their account?
some computers at uni/work prevent alot of actions including accessing "regedit" , "taskbar properties" etc. do they use some sort of program to do this? how can i do this?
does anyone know?
thanks

Yes, if you are using XP go to the run command and type gpedit.msc (I am currently on a W98 and not an xp one in work) so cannot remember exactly where to exactly direct you to but in the left hand side of the screen that pops up you can expand certain admin policies. on the right hand pane you enable or disable the policies you want to use. Like remove the run command from the Start Menu. Hide the Network Neighbour hood or My computer or Control panel. You can also set the policies to come into effect for certain usergroups other than local admin. You will also be able to attain what your post asks for. One thing I must point out is if you apply the policies for all users then you can effectively lock your PC down so you are unable to do anything. As said earlier, I am not on a XP machine at the mo - so for the time being I would do a search on the gpedit function of XP via a search engine or check the MS Newsgroups

lol, they can install another web browser that doesn't have the feature history or share the same history with IE :D

However considering the circumstances, I'd highly doubt that they'd be allowed to install any software. That's rather the point, to give users limited permissions.

You don't need any programs. Just do as gooner suggested. Go to 'Run' type 'gpedit.msc' and press enter. Go to 'User Configuration' >> Administrative Templates >> and you can limit access to loads of functions. However make sure that you don't limit functions for all groups, such as administrator or you won't be able to make any changes.

hi,
i am also interested in limiting user access at home. however, when i typed gpedit.msc in the run box, i get the following error:
windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. make sure you type the name correctly, and then try again.
is there any way to access this without using 'run'?
i'm using XP home edition. could this be the cause of the error?
thanks

GPEDIT is a group policy editor, and are only found within the Professional Edition of XP.
Some will suggest copying the file from Pro to Home, but you will most likely to receive meesages that some components are not found when try to run it.
