Ive just installed an NEC2500, im getting some bad stuttering when using it to watch dvds on my PC, it only happens on some dvds but not all, im running windows 2000 but ive tryed it on windows 98 and its the same

ultra DMA is on for hard drive and NEC2500
hardware aceleration checked in Blaze dvd

could it be the drivers fory video card or motherboard need updating or could it be the drive is faulty, ive noticed when it accesses a disk it takes longer than any other drive ive had

cheers neil

Have you tested the discs out on a standalone DVD Player? Also what media are you using?

The NEC2500 is known for being poor at reading some disks, particularly if the disks are marked/scratched.Are the ones you're having problems with marked ?
I don't know what other drive you had mate but the NEC2500 seek time is generally slower than a DVD-rom drive.

There is a firmware out there that will allow you to increase the drive's reading/ripping speeds but I can't make any promises as to what it will do to your drive in the long run. I know someone has a link for it around here somewhere. Anyways as mentioned it is better to go with a DVD-ROM drive. Faster Ripping Speeds, Less wear and tear on your burner. I used a DVD Burner as an all-in-one unit and it burned out after only 8 months. Good DVD-ROM drives are dirt cheap anyways.

I dont mind the slow rip speeds but it cant play a dvd film to watch, ive been using nero dvd speed to see what the drive can do and it starts at 1.83 rip speed and rises to about 2.3 and it always comes back with error messages sometimes it cant even start a test on some disks

Definitely get a seperate DVD-ROM drive. If you are going to watch films on it, it is a bad idea to do all that with your burner. Which country do you live in? I can point you towards a good deal if I know where. ;)

I would send it back and change it for a Pioneer 107.

Too many people having probs with this drive for my liking.

I agree that would be the best choice but if he doesn't want to go with that, that a seperate DVD-ROM would be the way to go.

Take a look at the number of complaints about the NECs and Ritek media and you will know why a bunch of people are critical of them. ;) I'm not saying that all NECs are worthless. A number of them work perfectly and it is a great find for those who don't have difficulty. I compare NEC writers to Princo media. They are cheap and work great for most people but there are still a signifcant number of others who have issues with them.
