Lo all

Asking this for a friend

Would a 1.4Ghz Centrino be equal in speed and performance to a 2.8Ghz P4?

The laptop would be used for everyday office apps, light CAD, Powerpoint, watching DVD's and maby a few games

(BTW i dont think he cares about Wi-Fi just mobile use of a PC)

As far as I am aware, the real P4 will win hands down from start to finish.
I am not a great fan of the Centrino, if I have to recommend, it would be a M-P4 with money saved spend on memory, as it will reduce disk access hence prolong battery life, unless Wi-Fi is something you will need, but having said that, most Wi-Fi are all 11g, and over the pass few weeks, we have found many if not all are totally incompatible with the earlier 11b standard, both on 11/22mbps, no matter what their small prints read.

The P4 will win hands down the mobile processors outperform equivalent speed CPUs because of their increased L2 cache mostly. the mobile p4s are more about conserving baterry life than anything else. Even if wifi is something you need you shouldn't have any trouble getting a pcmcia 802.11b or g card depending on what is compatible with your network.
