View Full Version : Problems with MAX…

I’ve just upgraded to Pipex MAX 8Mb, but I’ve noticed that my download speed is exactly the same as it was on 2MB. My modem tells me that I’m connected at 7.6Mbps. I’m obviously not. I’ve just done a speed test:-

Your line speed:

1906.5 Kbps

233.6 K bytes/sec

This is the same speed (if not a little slower) than my old 2Mb connection.

Any one have any idea what I’m doing wrong? Is there something I’m missing here?

Please help if you can.

Jessica

can your phone line take more then 2MB?
as in some area's including mine they can't.

According to the test I ran on the Pipex site, I can get 6.5Mbps. That's why I signed up for MAX.

only other suggestion is to contact them by phone and complain

No, just wait. ;)

You have to wait for your BRAS profile to update with BT when moving to a MAX product. This usuall happens within 48 hours but can often take upto 10 days, in fact BT Wholesale will not look at *ANY* speed complaints from an ISP until after the 10 day period. A common way of staying clear of this problem is that on the day of upgrading to leave your router switched off until the speed change has been made, usually you should get the correct speeds then. However, if your modem was sitched on whilst the change was made .....

Give it time, it should work fine in a few days. Some say to use your line heavilly and it helps but there is little real evidence that this is fully true. :)

I agree w/ Lazza, give it a few days. Try unplugging your modem for like 10mins and pluggin it back in. It should power cycle and hopefully update.

Have a similar prob myself and because i work for bt i managed to get a little bit more info the big problems they are having at the mo is upgrading the bras profile in some cases its just not being done i am with eclipse and after pushing it (because of slow connection speeds) they put it back to bt wholesale and they advised they have updated the bras server and i have noticed my speed go up a bit

They gave me a website to test the connection out on this doesnt look like the normal customer facing one that i have used at work the link is Here (http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/) when it asks you for your log on details thats your adsl log on details and not your email as instructed

Do the test and then feed the details back to your isp and go from there

Thanks Guys,

I unplugged the modem for 10mins. Now when I connect, I connect at 8,128kbps (must be better than 7.616kbps). Unfortunately, my download speed is still around 232kbps.

I’ll hang on for a few days and see if it improves.

What sort of download speed should I be getting on a 8,128kbps connection speed?

Thanks once again.

Jessica

All depends on contention levels at the time really, could be as high as 700+, also depends on the Http/Ftp server you are d/l from.

Also, just because sync level is now 8128 now does not mean that will be what BT will finally set the line speed at. When the BRAS profile has been set it could be lower, i.e. The most *stable* speed for your line - MAX is an adaptive product in this respect and totally unlike the previous ADSL offerings.

Thanks Lazza,

I think I understand.

There’s been no speed change yet. I suppose I’ll have to wait another few days or so.

Do I need to change my equipment? At the moment I’m using the Speedtouch 330 modem. The one that was supplied to me by Pipex a couple of years ago. I’ve downloaded the new ‘High Speed’ drivers that makes it compatible with 8Mb MAX and I’ve also downloaded and installed the patch that changes the ’USB Transfer Mode’ from ‘Bulk’ to ‘Isochronous’. Is there anything else I need do?

Thanks for the help.

Well it's not the *best* modem for the job especially as it's a USB device but it does work as my modem packed up last week so I had to dig out my old 330 and applied all the same software/patches that you did so I personally know it works fine, though I did get a number of disconnects when using BitTorrent.

You would be far better served though by getting a new modem tbh, something like the SpeedTouch 516 would suit far better:- http://www.dslsource.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=257

Dead easy to use and setup can be used as just an ethernet modem for 1 PC or a router.

Hi Lazza,

Thanks for the info. I’ve just been looking at the ‘Linksys ADSL2MUE’. It’s very similar to the 516 you mentioned.

I’ve been looking at this:-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/DSL_Cable_Modems.html

The Linksys modem can be connected by USB (I think it’s the old v1.1), I’m not too sure about Ethernet. I’m not even sure if I have a suitable port on the back of my computer for it. I’ve never used anything Ethernet before. I have an IEEE 1394 socket on the back of my Gigabyte GA-K8VT800 Pro motherboard. Is that the Ethernet socket?

Thanks for the help.

No that's firewire, would not rec the Linksys tbh as it is a USB deivice.

You may need a 10/100 nic card to connect it up with an ethernet connection but they are very cheap and easy to fit. One of these for instance is only £2.46 - http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/104381/rb/21119183274

Though personally I favour these at slightly more:- http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/43684

The Linksys can also be connected by ethernet (as well as USB). I think I have the option to use either. If so, I will go for the Linksys and buy a PCI ethernet card as you suggest.

Unless you have a better solution.

Cheers,

Jessica

Reading some reviews here:- http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Reviews.asp?ProductID=2052 I would give it a miss myself. IMHO for a straight ethernet modem which is what this is then the D-Link DSL-300T is a much better bet especially for P2P. In fact I'll let you into a little secret, the D-Link costs in the region of £45 but i know a place where you can get a brand new one for only £8 + £4 next day Parcelforce delivery - Sealed/boxed Grade A despite what the site say's. I had one from them last week and it's a steal! (I have a few SpeedTouch 546's on order now, I was really impressed with their prices/service) :D

Take a look here:- http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=560

Simple to setup and it just plain works without the complications of a router like port forwarding etc.

Also I just checked your mobo specs and it already has a gigabit ethernet port on it so there is no need for you to buy/install a seperate ethernet nic card either. :)

Thanks Lazza,

I respect your opinions, but the link to ‘dsldepot’ you gave seems to be dead. Could you please check it for me.

The D-Link DSL-300T does look the better of the two modems. On your recommendation, I’ll buy one.

Cheers,

Jessica

That's odd...

Using .co.uk, I get an error message saying 'The page cannot be displayed'. But, using .com, i.e. http://www.dsldepot.com/ I get there.

Cheers,

Jessica

p.s. Just been there. It's American. Where do you live? I thought you lived in Cornwall. Anyway. Can't see the D-Link DSL-300T mentioned anywhere.

Hi Lazza,

Still can’t get that site to appear. Never mind…

I’ve just ordered the 300T with Dabs. They’re on offer with £10 off.

Cheers,

Jessica
