here lately when I open my tray my PS2 starts clicking sounding like a machinegun before the tray opens. It does this agian when closing the tray. and sometimes (getting more often) it does this during game play and the game freezes. Does this mean the drive needs replaced?
This dang this does have than many hours on it!
I was thinking it was the gears on the tray but that would happen during game play. and would replacing the laser repair this or do you need to replace the whole drive?
Please help!
also where is a good place to send for repairs? or get parts

It could be the gears to the tray and laser mechanism as well. Heavens knows the PS2s are far from the most durable peices of electronics. Were it not for the cool exclusives for the system I wouldn't own one.

The tray seems to open smoothly.
Does the laser go to a dock position before the tray opens?
I was thinking that is when the noise starts.
This thing is ticking me off though. It is around two years old but gets played very little. I was thinking the media some how was doing it but the noise shows it's ugly face even with originals games.

Open it up mate and clean and then re-grease the 2 slider rails for the laser. Normally causes the racheting noise you're hearing as they get gunged up and prevent the laser from sliding across the tracks.
Also whilst its open clean the worm screw and plastic guide as its the guide which makes the noise. :)
No need to replace the laser or any drive components.
Simple fix mate.

remove all screws from the case
lift off lid to the right being careful not to damage the ribben behind the switch on the front,
then remove the small screws holding the lid on the laser and disc drawer
when laser lid is removed on the lefthand side you will see a rail and gear
also when replacing grease make sure you use a simular grease.

Quick point to note is that its easier if once you've removed the PS2 lid, plug it in and press EJECT so the tray comes out. Then disconnect the PS2 from the supply with the tray still out. Makes it easier to see the rails and laser mechanism..
Just don't go prodding about with the mains in! lol... :zombie:

I cleaned the lens and the rails there was very little dust in there but it did seem to help for a short while but the noise is coming back it almost sounds like a gear slipping on the laser. I did some searching for a replacement laser and found a couple of sites with them, My PS2 is a version 9 and I keep seeing disclaimers saying will not replace the R-type laser. WHAT THE HECK IS THE R-TYPE LASER, and how do I tell if mine is R-type or not?
and after I loose my cool and throw this piece of crap against a brick wall what would be the best way to repair it?

post on here your ps2 model number hopefully someone will tell you which laser to get.

an make sure the white plastic arm on the laser (rhs) underneath has a stylus type thing-this gets bunged up usually causin fault described

Any particular reason why you are digging up threads that are months old?
