Missing .exe files???????

Had this problem a few months back and its happened again
Turned on computer and for no reason it will not allow me to open ANY files as it says all the .exe files are missing, so no I.E. no help and support etc etc.
Last time I downloaded a 2 line solution which I put into cmd prompt in safe mode which did something to the file types and it was fixed

Cannot remember what it was or where I got it so I am on the laptop now hoping someone can help me please!!!
My system is a 2.8ghz P4 running XP

Might also be a good idea to update AV and Spyware software and do a thorough scan.

thanks m8, thats got me back in but interestingly I still cant get back on the net?? Using I.E.
I am running avg etc now to check nothing dodgy is lurking about so any thoughts on how to get back online would be gratefully received :)
