I cant put my finger on when it happened but my pc is know dire.

I have a 2500xp Bartong
1gb ram
MSI kt4av mobo
300 gb of hard drives (2 drives)

and the usual collection of items.

When i play back movies or mp3 the audio is jittery and movies are just jerky.

If i start an application it uses 100% of CPU power.

For example if i start grabit all resources are used. Winrar everything stands still. Any conversion of video eveything at a standstill. Start nero for burning then nothing else works.

These are all things that used to run fine.

I have cleaned the machine with Hijck this, Ad aware and spybot. Also have sygate firewall and avast running.

I thought it might be some form of mailware running in the background.

Opened task manager and when nothing is opened my cpu use is between 0% and 4%.

It only goes haywire when an app is started.

My sound is even jerky upon start up (you know the windows tune when it first boots up - that is even jerky) so it might be something starting at start up.

I need help. I want my machine back. I cant place what is wrong. the cpu useage goes mad as soon as anything is started - so that is why when media player, VLC or win dvd starts no smooth running of media happens.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Mick

Sound like your Hard Drive's DMA is not enabled , or you do not have teh correct chipset drivers loaded.

Pop in the motheboard's CDROM and try reloading the chiopset driver, then go into Control Panel/System/devices/IDE devices and make sure all DMA is enabled.

You were right. In PIO mode. Unistalled , let windows pick it back up and now back to its amazing beauty.

Thanks for your help
