How much faster is a Celeron 1ghz processor compared to a p3 350mhz processor

Significantly, however the processor is still crap.

It all depends on what you do. If all your going to do is browse the web and use word processors then it would be sufficent for you.

Yep like above, and if your going to go for a 1000mhz cpu get a P3 rather than a celeron

My brother has uses a P2 333 (@ 375) and has no problems with surfing the internet (ADSL 512k), burning CD's or watching DIVX stuff. He runs Win98 with 128MB and it's more than capable for his needs.

All I'm saying is think about what you want to use your computer for. If you are going to be doing video work or want to play the latest games then (you'll have to) upgrade but if all you want to do is surfing, word processing and burning CDs then quite simply a p3 350 is more than capable of all that.

If you want decent speed XP, latest games, dvd burning etc... then the Celeron 1GHz will do it in the short term but personally, I'd advocate adding a little more money to the equation and purchasing a new motherboard and processor (probably memory too). I recently built a computer (for someone on a real tight budget) with a bottom of the range ASROCK socket A motherboard (£25) and an Athlon XP2000+ (£39) and a friend who saw it running now wants one - he currently has a Celeron 1.3.

It is all relative. There are a bunch of other variables in there. 1. How much and what type of RAM 2. FSB Speed 3. Are you multi-tasking? While the MHZ is faster on the Celeron it is very limited with the number of applications that it can carry out at once. It is probably going to be a faster machine than the 350MHZ setup but as mentioned above if you could get a P3 with the same specs it would be much better.

Sorry the reason I ask was my brother has a p3 350mhz and I have an old 1 gig celeron lying in the attic and he was just wondering would there be much difference (speed) if he put the celeron processor into his computer instead of the p3.

You cannot put a 1GHz processor on a motherboard that's running a 350MHz processor unless you are using a selected few BX boards such as the Abit BH6 (and a few others). Even so the BIOS would have to be updated to be compatible.

Coming from someone who has been building and using computers since the old days of the 386 machines, I can tell you that there is a HUGE difference in performance between a 350MHz machine and a 1GHz machine.

The Celeron changed their design after 800Mhz few years ago to use the 100FSB, chances of making a board currently running a P3-350 to work with one is almost next to nil even with a BIOS update.

But I would totally agree with BD that the performance difference is huge, you would be better off either change the board to one that can take the Celeron, or start fresh by buying a cheap AMD board and a cheap Duron/Athlon, you would need a bigger PSU but from places like eBuyer, you are not going to break the bank for a major upgrade such as this.
