Don't think it's media specific m8. (Though I certainly wouldn't use cheap rubbish that degrades quicker than potato peeling in a compost heap). A very large % of people are having problems with the Hitachi drive yet those I've tested are having no boot issues whatsoever with verbs... or Ricoh for that matter. I think there are a serious amount of considerations. D/L burning was about 0.0000000001 % of peoples priority before 360 backups. As such burning software/firmware/drive compatability etc etc etc. is something that people are only really beginning to worry about. It's also said that Pioneer drives are the only reliable drives for burning 360 backups yet I have a few working NEC burns that appear just as good as Pioneer ones (must admit not done any P.I checks though)

Bottom line is verbs are about £1 more that bargain basement DVD+R D/L quite a lot on the surface, but I bet a few months down the line data integrity will still be quite high compared to a lot of certain other brands.

What I'm saying is the reliability and longevity of Verb media quite simply makes it the best dual layered DVD available. The fact that some of the supposedly picky Hitachis read it and apparently some samsung do not is neither here nor there. It would seem there are good 360 drives and bad 360 drives..... or it may be that there are good burners and bad burners, or good firmware and bad firmware..... you get my drift?

You can't say that verb might not be good because you have a samsung that wont read verb, cos you just might have a sh!te samsung drive. I have a good Hitachi drive that appears to boot very well compared to most hitachis.

Seeing has how I've witnessed first hand the degradation of dye over a very short time on cheap media, and by this I mean anything from a few days to a couple of months and even my PC drives can't read it. Then I'm inclined to buy more reliable media.

I personally feel there are way to many variables at the moment to make an informed decision, but like I've said cheap dye will degrade quickly and it's false economy to save £1 only to have to reburn in a few days/weeks/months time. Ritek had a good name for DVD-R s/l but their dual layer is quite frankly appaling. I never PERSONALLY liked CMC for compatability reasons... haven't tried their dual layered so can't comment. But what I can say is error scans on 6 month old verbatim media reveals a scan very much the same as when they were first burned, Some other brands/dyes could only wish for such reliability.

As for not making sense then please look at your argument, if verb is working in 1 360 SAMSUNG and not another 360 SAMSUNG then perhaps 1 of the 2 drives is to blame and not the media?

Just looking around and it transpires that the laser unit in every drive is the same be it Hitachi or samsung (theres a surprise). There is an excellent pot calibration tutorial on xbox scene, though it has to be said if your dealt a poor laser out of the box there isn't a great scope for improvement. Moda concludes that if a laser is shipped and the ohms is set above 4.0 you will have an almost certain chance of booting any media. If it's below that you can tweak and improve your chances but it's still not guaranteed (success stories seem to be 50/50) I find it interesting that apparently the Hitachi lasers are generally better but the drives firmware(maybe ? or something else) is hampering it. By all accounts a laser taken out of an Hitachi and put in a Samsung is very likely to be a good combo.

No solid conclusions but it makes for very interesting reading. Especially as laser are already on the open market so may be a good buy @ about £15 if you have a really troublesome drive.
