It appears that the file system employed on the hard disk on your new laptop is FAT/FAT32. One of the limitations of this file system is that it does not support files larger than 4.GB. Hence the error message.
Only the NTFS file system typically used on the more modern Operating Systems (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP) will support file sizes larger than 4GB. Windows 9x and ME can use only the FAT/FAT32 file system.
If you are using one of these Operating Systems, then whosoever configured your laptop has done you a great disservice. Although the Operating Systems above can utilize both the FAT32 and NTFS file systems, they usually perform more efficiently with the NTFS file system, which does not suffer the limitation you recently discovered.
Although it is possible to convert from the FAT/FAT32 file system to the NTFS file system, it is better to format from scratch with the NTFS file system as the cluster sizes are smaller.
Although the conversion is fairly simple this operation is not without it's risks, therefore it is always recommended that you backup you data first.
