Right,

LCD at 42" doesn't come close to Plasma,

The contrast ratio isn't as good, artifacts are more visible. Football and other sports suffer badly from colour bleeding on SD material etc.

Plasma all the way, however I'd look away from the Philips one as it's absolute crap. If your buying a plasma stick to either Panasonic, Pioneer or Hitachi. If you decide LCD which is good if your putting a Hi def signal through it go for Toshiba. Sony use LG panels as do Samsung.

If paying a few bob more is not a problem I'd recommend looking at the Sony V series over the Tosh, though the Tosh has two hdmi connections vs the Sony's one

With regards to LCD you can get the Tosh 37WLT66 from John Lewis (get them to match the Cheadle branch) for £1199 with free DVD recorder and 5 year guarantee.
Was going to do this myself but decided on a 32 for now (went for Sony 32V2000..from JL and price-matched ;) ) and will get a monster some time in the future when things settle a bit more.

I'm also thinking of buying a new tv. We watch a lot of football, so because of picture bleed on LCD, would I be better getting plasma. Or would a LCD tv be Ok if I connected it to Sky HD ? Oh and I'm looking to buy a 37" tv.. Any recommendations

I've seen a Dell 37" lcd for £999 - is this a good deal ?

I've got a Tosh 37" LCD connected to SkyHD and it's amazing, no colour bleed etc

because of picture bleed on LCD

Depends on the source. Larger panels tend to accentuate a crap feed yet showcase a great feed

As for the Dell...not sure, but the Tosh can be had for just over 1100 so I'd be tempted to stretch to that

Could not agree more, I am impressed at the ammount of crap feeds I have seen. Good DVD transfer, good equipment and LCD is most impressive, but the only thing I watch on TV are DVD movies, I have no time for any other form of TV, do not think I would want it either. It is just too early for me for plasma & HDTV

Costco USA is supposed to have a Sceptre 37" for $999 starting Augest 1st, comes with three hdtv tuners. (hdtv, qam, atsc)....

Plasma is okay, but uses 450+watts & gets hot (Think of summertime)....also are prone to screen write in after 15 min or so (Might be longer these days). But have a nicer contrast range, 5000:1 (Same as a CRT), LCD tvs can be as low as 600:1.....that Sceptre is supposed to be around 1100:1.....

I concur. Neither of these options are cheap and it seems that the technology is still in a severe state of flux (meaning that there always seem to be significant changes being made from year to year). I have been sorely tempted to buy a medium sized LCD or Plasma TV but each time I take a look at the cost and the fact that the TV could become virtually obsolete within the next couple of years, I just give up in frustration. I bought a regular 27" Zenith 6 years ago for a whopping $223 USD and it still delivers a great picture and is flexible for all sorts of applications. When LCD and Plasma become more standardized and significantly cheaper then I will look into buying one.

Burn-in and power consumption are mostly irrelevent factors now. Modern plasma's do not have the same burn-in issues as the first generation screens.
Power consumption has also been improved but still a little higher then an LCD of comparable screen dimensions.
