I had numreous written warnings, but the other day I got clocked at 81mph in a 55mph zone in Mcdonough county just outside of Western Illinois Universities campus. Needless to say, I got the first speeding ticket ever in my life. Question 1) What is considered wreckless driving in the state of Illinois? 2) What are the chances of me getting on court supervision as this is my first offense?

Do you go to Western? I go to Northern, just transferred from Southern. :)

I think 25mph over is reckless driving (could be 30 I'm not 100%), but if he didn't give you a ticket for RD then you are ok. Even if they did try to give you a RD then the DA would drop it anyways especially if this is your first ticket. You're still going to have a hefty fine and I'm pretty sure you can get court supervision. Its all up to the assistant DA that you will talk to when you go to court. Just hope they are in a good mood that morning.

You might want to see if they'll let you take some classes to get it off your record instead of court supervision.

Go buy yourself a radar detector. :)

Yeah, I just graduated from W.I.U last year. Thanks for the reply, I got to looking at my ticket and on the back it says "$95.00 for speeding more than 20mph but not more than 30mph over the limit." I guess I'm ok, but that's one hell of a fine when you add on court cost.

If you'd be available to mailing through the board, I could get you some free advice...

30 mph+ is wreckless driving. If the cop chose to, he could of arrested you.

If 30mph over is wreckless driving then I'd be alright, as I was only going 81mph not 85mph. :)

i am from the UK, just wondering do you get points on yr licence for offences?

If we get 12 points in less then 3 years you get banned :(

like your offence would prob be equal to 3 points and a £60(UKP) fine.

I was caught a few years ago doing 96mph(speed limit 70mph) on a motorway and got 6 points and £140(UKP) fine.

or do you just pay fines and thats it?

thnx

You can buy books that answer this, on amazon.com bn.com nolo.com or local bookstore or library. e.g. BEAT THAT TICKET. They are easy to read law books.

Court supervision means simply that you're basically on a 1-3 month probation period where if you get another ticket during that time span, your going to be up the creek without a paddle. The benifit though is that the ticket doesn't get put on your record and keeps your insurance cost down.

@noyfb we used to use points but I've never seen them and I've had about every ticket possible as far as traffic goes (no DUI's though). Here they just give you a fine and let you go. If you get 3 speeding tickets in 1 year then you loose your license. So with court supervision as long as you don't get another ticket within a certain period (I'm pretty sure its 6 months) then it doesn't go towards the 3 per year limit.

We also have driving classes you can take to get the stuff off your record instead of court supervision.

There was a great story a while back about a woman in the UK who was clocked at a few mph over the speed limit by 4 separate cameras in one journey. She got a fine and 3 points for each offence - therefore lost her licence in one trip!

Meanwhile, underage kids with no licence or insurance get caught half a dozen times, get a rap over the knuckles and are banned from driving - as if that makes a difference, they weren't allowed to be driving in the first place!!!!

Oh how I look forward to coming home.

@fatty - it sounds like your system of 3 fines in a year is similar to the points system in the UK but more lenient, I seem to recall that points wear off after a while (though not that quickly).

Pornoman, The laws have changed abit since I last drove a squad car, but if you go to court you will get 4 hours of driving school and be on supervision for 30 days. If you complete the school and the supervision it wont be reported to your insurance company. It used to be show up to court pay your $50 fine and get supervision. If you get a second ticket in the year you get 8 hours of school. I beleive on the form you fill out you can pay the fine and request supervision + 4 hours of school and dont have to show up to court, or pay the fine and have it reported to your insurance co.
