On start up my PC has been wanting to run chkdsk and although there is an option on screen to skip this, it does it anyway. It has come up with File Record Segment 40412 is unreadable, with the number going as high as 49163. It then deletes, verifies, recovers files etc., then runs ok. Dont a bit of surfing, and seen that it could be the hard drive on its way out. OH switched PC off last night when I was in bed, and when I turned it on this morning, had the windows validation thingy (blue star). I ran the fix from this forum (on my sons PC too, which is fine now) but on reboot my PC has died. Getting the black screen prompting me to start windows in safe mode, last known good configuration or start normally etc. No matter what I choose it just reverts back to that same screen. On advise I have tried reseating the RAM, no difference, unplugging and replugging the hard drive, no difference.

Does anyone have advice? Do I need a new hard drive, or is there something else I can try?

Thanks in advance :round:

It seems like the heads have probably made impressions on the polished platters inside your HDD, this is progressive, think it is time for a new drive, you could wait for a second opinion.

Thanks, Cougar, I have ordered a new hard drive. Not had a lot of luck these last few months, one thing after another, maybe I'll get a quieter life now...
