i have windows ME on my HDD now. But what i want to do is use partition magic to split C: leaving ME on one part and installing XP on the 2nd part. Then after i get XP situated my programs i want installed then i want to delete the ME partition giving XP the whole drive. can this be done?

Why dont you do an upgrade from ME to XP? XP will run a test before installing showing any incompatible programs drivers ect (Then get them before upgrading), If alls ok then after installing you can change the file system to ntfs via a command prompt. The above method your asking about can be done but if you aint competent with partition magic you may end up with an unbootable operating system, Or you can also get a 2nd HDD and have a dual boot system.

If you create a new partition and install XP on it, that would work fine.
You would have ME on C:\ and XP on the new partition.
The only problem is that the boot files for the new XP installation will be placed on the C:\ drive with ME and once that is deleted then XP will not boot.
You are better off just wiping the drive clean and installing XP on its own.
