some people are selling XBOX hard drives and dvdroms on ebay.
i was wondering if they work on the PC? are they basicaly the same type of hardware or are they completely different?

The hard drives will work, they are just standard PATA IDE hard disks. You need to make sure however that they are unlocked before they were taken out of the Xbox.
The DVD-ROMs won't work.

what if someone had a locked drive. can it be unlocked or does that mean its unusable? also, why are they locked in the first place?

They come locked from M$ so that you can't take them out the xbox and into your pc, if it's locked the only way to unlock it is with the xbox that it originally came from.

the dvd drives read the opposite way on a disc to a standard drive
