That is a good site. The author clearly knows exactly what he's talking about, rare for media explanation sites. What a find!!

A few areas to note:

1) Ritek haven't always been good -- I recall the G01/2 media as well and it was awful, therefore to criticise companies like Prodisc based on previous iffy media doesn't really work either.

2) Quote:

Gradual data loss. Also known as ;"disc fade" and "laser rot", this is actually not very possible due to the mechanics of DVD recordable media. Terms like "disc fade" and "laser rot" only apply to pressed media, which are altogether different from recordable media in structure and physical structure. These theories are still widely argued, and applied only to the corrosion of the metal discs.

The only feasible explanation for burned media would be a breaking of the vacuum enclosure of the disc, allowing air and moisture to permeate the metal and dye. But such chain reaction would occur fairly quickly, not at a gradual pace of months.

Simple explanation: The likely reason people face "disc rot" is that they simply did not check the media when it was first burned. Or the player/reader is now dirty, and not related to the disc at all.An important point. If your disc is marginal in the first place, that's the reason for lost data after a few months, not "bad dye" or something similar. The answer is to check your discs properly!!! Running them through a DVD player after burning just isn't enough.

I've personally never subscribed to the gradual data loss with DVD-R theory either; reason being that I can grab hold of some 2 or 3 year old 1x DVD-R here that've been sitting at the bottom of my "crap heap" spindle (where all the rubbish discs go) and the disc burns to exactly the same standard as it did previously..... If the dye corroded, that wouldn't be possible.
