By "How many" I assume you mean what size. What is your box and it's version? Pace units I have done had Maxtor 40GB 5400rpm, I have replaced them with 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB, do not think the cache matters but I have bought 2MB's. Maxtors are used for their short spin up times
Amstrad units I have done have had 40GB Samsung SpinPoint that I have upped to 160GB. I have also fitted fan mate fan controls to keep the fan noise down in some environments where the house is like a bakers oven. I have not fitted any for a while though.

I hope you are not going to buy just any Maxtor drive, some of them crash becase they took about a second or two too long to spin up, I used 5400RPM D540's, from what I can remember I had trouble with some V1 firmware that had some sort of bug, do not think it was all V1 firmware. The bug froze Sky+ recordings at the hour mark. The Sky+ V2 firmware for Pace fixed it. I know someone who has a 80GB in a v1 that works fine but I did not fit it.
