for testing purposes only:

is it safe to build a computer and have everything connected outside a case? im only asking because i have alot of motherboards and other devices i want to test, but i dont have a spare case to put them in and. even if i did, i cant be bothered to screw each one in, test it, then take it out.

any advice? which item are likely to get damaged or are unsafe to use outside the case, if any? im mostly consered about the motherboard.

thanks

I do it all the time, I just use the anti static bag it came in and set it on that.

Yup, perfectly feasable (sp?).

Manufacturers sometimes realise you may want to do this (Abit) and provide you with power and reset buttons built onto the motherboard so you don't have to muck about bridging pins to start the machine.

Just remember that the system won't be grounded that well so make sure you touch the metal on the psu to get rid of the static before handling the mobo.

A case is more organized, easier to work with and troubleshoot and also safer.
