i have an all in 1 card reader, internal, and after copying a lot of files to a memory card i stopped the devices with the stop hardware in the system tray, as i was told its the best thing to do before removing the card.

when i turn the pc back on i can get the usb bit to work but its no longer showing the drives in windows explorer, so i can't copy anything anymore.

as i'm on xp there are no drivers and in the control panel its showing as unknown device.

can anyone help me get the card reader bit back?

What all the things you have tried to bring it back to work?

Easiest try is un-install the unknown device from Device Manager and Restart Windows. Let it pick up on the start or use System Restore to revert back to earlier date when your system was working perfectly.

try and update the service pack
if you dont have any on the machine service pack 1 contains usb drivers
as xp pro does not have them on there

I have this issue as well on my built in FDD & 7 card reader.

the FDD still gets recognised, but the "removable" media stops being recognised, so i reboot it and it works again. annoying, not sure if i have a faulty USB socket on the Mobo though??

Whoever told you that Don't know NOWT!! Tell em I said so...

Just incert your card into the card reader, then Right click mouse button n chose "Copy Here". when it is finished just look in the folder to check all photos are there, then Delete from the card and just Pull card out when finished..Safer to do Copy Here..You can see the transfer happening on your screen..Red light on card reader gos out when finished. Can't be No Simpler than that, can It.!!

NO need to use 'Safely remove Hardware'..EVER.
