SATA and IDE Hard Drives Together?

As topic is it possible to run both types of HDD in the system at the same time?
My friends SATA HDD has gone down and become corrupt however he can still access the files he wants when we hook it up to my system on the SATA 1 channel but he would like to hook it up to his own machine using his old IDE HDD for the OS and the SATA drive as a slave.

Is this possible?
