I am using DVD Decrypter to rip ISOs and then use the same for burning them onto DVD-Rs. I am using TDK DVD-Rs which support a maximum write speed of 16x. The writer I am using also supports this speed, and it's a NEC ND-3550A.

The Problem is that when I burn DVDs I choose 8x speed, but regardless of what I choose it never goes about 1.8x and generally hovers around 1.4x or so, i.e. it tkaes about 30 minutes to burn a disc! Why??? I am using a 1.5GHz Pentium IV, with 384 MB RAM - is the RAM too little?

If it's taking 30 mins, then it's only burning at 2 X speed.

Check in Device Manager/ IDE ATA ATAPI Controllers .... right click on the channel, where the burner is located, select Properties/Advanced and make sure your Transfer Mode hasn't reverted to PIO. If it has change it back to Ultra DMA, reboot and make sure the new setting(s) have captured.

A firmware update could also be in order. TDK aren't terrible but I can think of better media to use for the money.

If my DVD writer is a slave to my main CD drive, then I am correct in assuming that it is in the secondary IDE channel, right? The setting for that channel does have PIO... what does that mean?

Well first things first ...... the burner should be the Master on the secondary channel, with the Reader as the slave. Change this first ... make sure you reset the jumpers on both drives.

Next you must get the burner to the highest DMA Mode, as mentioned above.

That PIO vs. DMA thing worked liked a charm. Thanks!!

hmmm... it does work beautifully for ps2 games (i.e. burnt at 4x) but if I try to burn a movie at 16x it won't go beyond say 9.2x or so. The TDK discs I am using are quite good and support 16x... in fact one of the reasons I bought them were that they had good reviews about actually burning at 16x... any ideas?

It's probably the media.

Try using some Verbatim 16 X ... make sure they're the MCC dye ... I find these work fine at 16 X.
