email notification sample

i have a new email alert sample set up if i go into sounds and click the play button on the new mail notification it plays the sample but if i get a new email nothing happens ???
please help

I think the name is "Windows XP Notify.wav" is located in "\windows\media" folder. Rename this old file to something like ***.wav.bak and copy your creation to the same location with the same name as that of the original file.

any chance you could put that in lamans terms ?
new mail notification doesn't work but windows start up and end windows still work ???
