Not sure if have read your question correctly ,but if your asking that can u run a dvd rom as a slave to the hard drive sharing the same ide channel then yes u can all u need is an ide cable something like this one http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=32461 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=32461)

with the 3 connectors on ,,ie 1 goes into your m/b ,1 into Hard drive and 1 in to the dvdrom drive. and just make sure you have jumper settings correct on each drive.

I was going to run my hdd and an optical drive on the same ide but have read that the optical drive will slow down the speed of the hdd,as i understand it its best to keep hdd and optical drives on seperate ide channels.

maybe anoter IDE card required then as I want to have dvd writer, cd writer and dvd rom drive, dont want to slow down the hd though!. The board ive got has sata so maybe thats the way to go with the hard drive and leave the ide channels free for the writers etc

U could always get a dvd/cdrw combo drive!Although to be honest i had that setup previously and wouldnt say that i noticed having any real speed issues while accessing the hdd so personally i wouldnt bother with the ide card,,,give it a go see wot u think if u not happy u could always buy an ide card at a later date!!!
