View Full Version : What speeds did older PC's run at? [in Mhz]
by comparing older cpu's to modern cpu speeds in mhz, i am trying to assertain what my old 486SX would rate as, speed-wise ~ 50 Mhz maybe?..
...for i've heard a cyrix 586xx = a pentium-1 , an both were roughly 100 mhz...
...an then assume a 486-DX was 80mhz ?
[ps- i also heard an amd athlon cpu = pentium-4]
oh i dunno, wot say u ?

I'm not totally sure as it's been a really long time, but I believe you're in the ball park. Probably about 33 mhz for 486SX and 66 mhz for 486DX if I remember correctly.
As far as the P4 and Athlon goes, I'm sure we could debate that here for ages.

Those old CPU's were available in more then just one or two speeds...
The 486SX and 486DX were both available in 20, 25, 33, 50, and 66Mhz speeds. Both CPU's used identical cores but the DX also had a working FPU and cache. The 486 Overdrive CPU went up to 100Mhz.
The Pentium 1 was available in various speeds ranging from 60Mhz to 266Mhz. Pentium 1 MMX were 233Mhz and 266Mhz.
The Pentium Pro was 150Mhz, 166Mhz, 180Mhz, and 200Mhz.
The Pentium II was available in speeds ranging from 233mhz up to 450Mhz. (FYI, the Pentium II's were technically just faster Pentium Pros with MMX in a Slot 1 cartridge configuration)
The Pentium III went from 450Mhz to 1.4Ghz. (Intel's consumer website may say the P3 only went up to 1.33Ghz but they did is fact sell a P3 1.4Ghz for server and Dual CPU configurations which you may still find on ebay)
