I'm currently running two computers. One with Windows XP and the other with Windows 98SE. I have them networked together via a Linsys 4 port router. My problem is when I go to download something, with bittorent in particular, I never get a transfer rate of more than 7kbps or 8kbps. My status LED is always yellow indicating I'm not receiving any incoming connections and this is more than likely why my download rates are so slow. I have an ADSL connection with 768up128down. I'm also running Sygate personal firewall on both computers. My question is, how do I allow my computers to receive incoming connections so I can speed up my downloads?

Not sure if it will help but theres a tweak test at www.dslreports.com that may speed things up a little, especially on the win98 pc.

u need to forward the ports to ur computers. for example, like forward port from 6881 to 6891 to ur first computer lets say 192.168.0.1, then forward port from 6892 to 6902 to ur second computer say 192.168.0.2. after that, just go the pref if u are using shadow;s experimential and change the port number to the ones that u set.

it doesn't have to be 10 ports for each computer, but i feel 10 is enough.

Thanks Fisherman, but I'm a little new to this whole thing. How do I go about forwarding ports. I know I need to access my router's webpage and apply the settings from there, but I'm not sure what to do.

u have to access ur router to find the page. it should say forward ports or forwarding something like that. u know how to access ur router right?

Well I think I've done it. It's a Linksys 4 port router. I've fumbled through the settings and now my LED lights are green now indicating that the torrent is downloading correctly and that I'm receiving incoming connections, but my transfer rates don't seem any faster though.

A couple of things to try. First, get the latest drivers for your network card and install them.

Next, go into the proprties of your network card on your XP box and see how the duplexing mode is set up. You should have several options such as Automatic, 10Mbps/full duplex, 10Mbps/half duplex, 100Mbps/full duplex, 100Mbps/ half duplex. Note what it is set at. then go to your Win98 box and see if it is set the same. Set it the same way as the XP box and see if that helps.

If you've never adjusted the RWIN on the win98 machine then you could probably double the speed by using that tweak test I recommended.

Just port forward 6881-6999 incoming and outgoing on the router. The instructions are in the manual, and I'm sure you can figure it out. ;)

Post a speed test, you can't judge your over all speed based on a P2P program.

Just forwarded the ports with no problems and it seems to be connecting easier just not downloading at a very good clip at all. My speeds are 652down and 129up on the speed test I just did.

Then there is nothing wrong with your conection itself. And you should be set now that you've forwarded the ports.
