View Full Version : Hard Drive Failed . . . Help!

My external 40gig hard drive for my mac has failed.
When I plug it in now, it says do I want to initialize. The answer is no cos I got a load of work on it that I need.
Whats the best way of recovering this work?
Please help!!!

Try booting with disk warrior it helped me when my 250gb hd failed

anyone else any suggestions?
If I plug the firewire drive into my pc and use pc software to recover the files, would it work?

since its not pc formatted it wont help
Also you could try your disk utilites tool that came with the OS disk boot up your computer with the os disk and run the tools

Sounds like the hardware is shot. The IO interconnect is gone (IO interconnect isnt the right word, but it closest describes what i am thinking of)
You'll be best of seeing a data recovery specialist. They can transfer the platters to another drive and get the data back.

Thats what I was afraid of. It'll cost a fortune!
I put my hand on the top of the case and the drive is running smoothly. Not sure if there is anything else I can do. :(

You could try and swap the part of the assembly with the platters in it into another drive. I did it once but screwed up part of the disc. I would offer to do it but wouldn't want to do anyone elses for fear of it going wrong. If you decide to give it a bash be careful cause its easy to destroy all your data. Make sure you are grounded and static free. And try working in an environment as free as dust as possible
