It depends what you use your box for.

If you just use the Net and write emails & docs, your current spec is fine ;)

an increase in RAM will make the system run alot faster.

if movies are choppy or skip, then a video card would help.

Do you have a palomino xp1800 or a thouroughbred xp1800? The palomino can't be overclocked but a thouroughbred can be taken as fast as 1.65ghz.

i use my pc for everything especailly for games. My graphics card is still used for the latest games and still works fine with all the newest ones out...lol:laugh:
For improving my speed, i know i should increase my ram but what about my cpu?
Do i need an upgrade??

As you plan to do some gaming then upgrading your current set-up would really only be a stop-gap measure due to the fact that the PC world is going through a (slow) transition to 64bit computing and the PCI-Express format.

By the end of 2006 you'll probably be craving more power and won't have any upgrade path open to you. Not only that you'll pay once for upgrading now and probably again at the end of the year whereas if you change to up-to-date components now, you'll be future proofed and will only have to upgrade certain parts when the time is right.

In saying that, if you take the stop gap route then there are some pretty good bargains to be found!

I would personally say upgrade to a socket 939 AMD 64bit (3200 perhaps), 512meg memory (at the very least) and a 939 motherboard with PCI-e. Oh and Geforce 6600GT PCI-e cards, while not top of the range, are great cards for those on a budget.

Hope this helps!

Being in a similar situation as you and after reading the firing squad report over at doom9 i have decided to WAIT until the HD support of 939 mobos and 6xxx, 7xxx graphics cards has been cleared up.
I dont want to be up grading to find out i cant use blu ray or hd dvd drives cos my new mobo or whatever isnt supported for play back.
