hi, a friend of mine has just bought herself an imac (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#) pc (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#). she used to have a normal laptop (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#) which she used to connect to the net (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#) on using bt (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#) broadband (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#). she's now trying to connect using that again on the imac. she says she's got the imac seeing the modem (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#) but can't get onto the net.

i know a fair bit about pc's but have never seen an imac before so am stuck for answers as it doesn't have the things on that i'd tend to look at like internet options and the operating system (http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cgi/Ultimate.cgi/showthread.php?p=1541372#) is something else.

can anyone give me any idea's to help her get connected. i'm assuming that as she says the pc is seeing the modem that its one that works on an imac as well as a normal pc.

any help appreciated

How does the computer connect to the modem, USB or ethernet?
Some of these modems have a USB and an ethernet port, use the ethernet port if possible.

If it's USB you will need to install drivers for it, they are probably on the disk that came with the modem, with instructions or from the BT website.
If it's ethernet goto system preferences>network then configure in the tcp/ip tab select configure ipv4 with using DCHP, close the window and apply the settings.

USB modems do not work very well with macs (or pc's for that matter), in the long run you are better off with an ADSL modem router that connects via ethernet. They can be bought very cheaply.
