:(
All seemed to go well with the building part.....unsure of a few of the front panel usb tiddly wires, but I ,made educated guesses.
the motherboard, cpu,, and ram are all new, the rest is old.

Problem is, I now go to boot the system and it powers on pressing the rear power button, not the front power button, then dies after 2 seconds!!!

whats that all about.

tried everything I can think off....swappin h/d, psu, gfx card, but no change.
is it a faulty component ...or can u help me ?

thanx in advance.

What do you mean by rear power button?..the switch on the power supply? The switch on the power supply would never actually turn on a modern system (unless you change the Restore on AC power Loss option in BIOS). The momentary activity you see when the power supply is turned on is normal as some circuits on the motherboard energize. You still need to actually use the front power button to start the system the first time.

Did you double-check the wiring you did for the front power button?

thanks foir the reply mate.
nice to hear the 2 second power up could be normal,
and yes , the power button cable was the first thing I tried.
switched them into as many diff variations I could but still same result.
any more ideas ?

Jesus m8, sounds like you've got the front panel wiring seriously wrong - have you not got the manual???

What motherboard is it? What CPU?

I would suggest you remove all the wires (especially the ones for USB which you aren't sure about) and JUST leave the power switch and then try it out. Also remove all unnecessary peripherals (modem, whatever).

Also, some brands of board will automatically power off if the FSB settings are wrong for the CPU (ABit springs to mind) - have you checked for jumpers on the board for clock setting?

STRONGLY suggest you look at, or google for, the manual. They can be very enlightening ...

Yeh m8, got the manual.....panel wiring is correct deffo.

Its a cheapo Asrock K8 upgrade mobo with sempron 2800.

I would suggest you remove all the wires (especially the ones for USB which you aren't sure about) - alreeady did that, made no difference.

Jumpers are all correct, untouched from default, set for socket 754 cpu.

Have you got a different PSU to try?? We use these boards in some of our system builds and would suggest its at least 350w :)

Page 20 of the manual, the last section regarding ATX Power Connectors, states :

ATX 12V Connector (4-pin ATX12V1) (see p.9, No. 34)
Please note that it is necessary to connect a power supply with
ATX 12V plug to this connector
so that it can provides sufficient
power. Failing to do so will cause
the failure to power up.

Did you do this ?

Well, you could try another power supply too....

swapped psu already no difference.

all power connectors correct.

now the system powers up and stays on.....the front power button works, but the reset doesn't !! and there is no beeps, and no signal/picture going to the monitor.

This is poo,I'm not happy.

I always keep a spare PS around.... But, if we only had a picture of your computer, a picture is worth a thousand words.....

Okay, this did happen to me once. I took my personally made computer to the computer tech and he told me that my video card had to be in PCI slot 0 (cause it wasn't) & there could be no empty PCI slots between PCI cards, so he of course changed my cards to fit. Pushed the button & it worked.

Just wait for the naysayers to come along & say some stupid HG post....but alas, this really did happen to me.

bargain build, no posh bits ;-(

Asrock k8upgrade nf3 - new
AMD 64 sempron 2800 - new retail with h/s fan
512 ddr 400 - new
radeon 9250 128mb agp - new......although tried my old agp card.
500w psu - old perfectly workin
h/d + cd + dvd all old but perfectly workin
Case - cheapo ebuyer with front usb/audio/firewire and bays a plenty.

When you fitted the mobo in the case, did you fit brass stand offs ?

Recheck jumpers on mobo

Try removing everything except Graphics Card and RAM .... if you've tried a different graphics card and you're not getting any display, even at bios post, there must a short to the case or mobo or CPU fault.

sorted now, motherboard was damaged. can actually see a blown part of the track on the rear side.
Swapped everything onto an MSI board and it all works perfect.
Lesson - Asrock suck....you get what u pay for.....and I'm jinxed when it comes to 'savin' money.lol
thanks for all replies.
