Hi there,

Is this a known issue?

I have run into it countless times with both Ipod Mini's and Nano's.

When you plug the USB cable into the PC, the Ipod never appears in the list on the left of the screen in Itunes.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. However, there does not seem to be any rhyme nor reason as to when it does.

Many thanks.

I've had this problem, with one of our iPods (20gb).
I found that if you plug the iPod in the back of the PC, it works fine, but plug it in the front and it's not recognised.
The same iPod works on another PC (my son's) in front or back ports.

My daughter has a Nano and this works fine in both front and back ports on both PC's .... so I agree with you ... there's no rhyme nor reason.

I did think at one time, it was the PC, but we recently put some stuff on a new iPod Video and this was ok too.

I figure it may have been an issue with earlier models maybe.

Thanks Phil.

Being a genius, like your good self, i decided it was probably the front USB ports causing the problem as well.

However, on plugging the Ipod into the back of the PC (ie, straight into the Asus mobo), i still have the same problem and I have never had any problems with USB devices on this mobo.

Give me my Zen over the kids Ipod's any day of the week! :uhwell:

LOL ..... my theory is ... it's a voltage issue i.e. it's not able to pull enough power from the port(s) on some mobos.

I haven't tried it, but I would put a little wager that a Belkin USB2 PCI Card, would probably sort the problem out .... so, if you happen to have one of these knocking around ........ dont go out and buy one tho. in case I'm wrong ;)

Phil,

I have managed to sort it. I had a brain wave (you may have felt it) and remembered how i fixed it before.

I reset the Ipod by holding down the MENU and center button together.

The was then picked up by itunes.

Thought i'd share it with you, but obviously make sure you have your itunes backed up first!

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion m8, but alas .... I have already tried that a few times and things didn't improve.

So it's still the back ports or the Lappy for me ;)
