Hi guys

a friend of mine has a computer that is very well spec'ed

its a 3400xp 64 bit cpu and 1gb of ram, win xp pro

its a tiny/time branded pc, it runs very slow and runs very hot when you touch the case? the cpu runs at 85 degrees celcius.

i have ran numerous checks, anti virus scans etc but it still runs slow

shutdown takes 3 mins, startup takes about 4 mins

the hard drives are 30% full and are 320gb between them, FAT32

has any one got an idea from what i have told them why it is running so slow? as im baffled

my 1500xp pc runs faster! much faster!

simple answer its a tiny/time branded pc!!!!

try adding more fans if possible
and maybe format the harddrive and a fresh install of xp as it maybe clogged up with old data

Defrag the HD`s. Clean out the fans in the pc. How long has he had it?

First thing you need to do is to add a case blower and replace the CPU fan, its very very high.

Then I would suggest a clean install, the slow speed could also caused by DMA not enabled, on Intel boards, you will also need the chipset drivers.

If he hasn't got an XP CD and cant reinstall ... he could defrag, as suggested above ... also has he scanned the PC for Spyware & Virus's ?

As Duffy says 85c is pretty high for the CPU ... that needs addressing first IMO, otherwise he wont have a PC (Slow or Fast).
