View Full Version : Odd connection speeds with Pipex?

Any Pipex broadband users reading this in the UK? Has any one noticed a drop in speed lately?

I’m on the Solo 1000 1Mb uncapped service. My Speedtouch modem reports my connection speed as 2.2Mbps, but the fastest I can download anything is only 116Kbps. Is that correct?

I’ve done the BT speedtester bit (as instructed by a very nice Pipex engineer) and the test show a download speed of 1,834Kbps.

Can any one make sense of all this for me?

I don’t understand the relationship between Mbps and Kbps. If I’m connected at 2.2Mbps my download speed should be 220Kbps. But, it’s only 116Kbps. Correct me, if I’m wrong – I know you will.

Cheers,

Jessica

Basically Windows always reports the speed wrongly, presumably due to the drivers.

The speed you are getting 116Kbps is correct for a 1Mb line. The BT speedster test is a bit confusing I agree.

k's and m's, have a read of http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bytes1.htm

I am on 1mb line m8, i was recently upgraded from half a meg, actually it was about six months ago.

Anyways,i havent noticed any drops in speed but when i was upgraded i noticed i was getting 2mb speeds for a couple of months and then i noticed it dropped down to 1 mb. I believe when u get upgraded the speeds tend to be alot faster than normal and that was obviously the case.

The only thing i have noticed since is my conection status says i am conected at 2.2 Mbps even thought i know my speed is 1 Mb.

Sorry that probably isnt much use to u m8.

steve.

Hi Steve,

That’s what probably happened to me. When I joined Pipex last May, I noticed that I was connected at 2.2Mbps even though I was only paying for 1.1Mbps service. Then early in December, my online speed was noticeably slower, hence my original post.

It would seem that from May to December I was actually connected at 2.2Mbps. Now, the software and modem reports my line speed as being 2.2Mbps but my actual speed is just 1.1Mbps. Which is fair enough, I only signed up to their 1.1Mbps service. Nice while it lasted.

Thanks for the input…

Jessica
