Hi all
have a packard bell computer running window home edition i want to transfer the 160gb hard drive to a new pc i have built but keep the copy of windows its running but only in safe mode crashes other than that
any ideas would be greatfully recieved

You can use the 160gb HDD in your new PC, but you wont be able to use the same version of Windows XP, as this has been activated, on a PC with different hardware.
Windows Product Activation records hardware serial information and if it detects major hardware changes, it will not operate. The same would apply if you changed the mobo and/or other parts in your Packard Bell.
If you have the original Windows Disk (not a Recovery Disk), you could try a reinstall of Windows and try activating by phone, advising M$ that you have changed mobo/processor and other parts.

theres only a recovery disc and my friend does not want topay another £70.00 for another copy of windows when she alreadyhas a liecence

Without an original Windows disk, she will find it near impossible imo.
Recovery disks are a PIA .... and dont allow any flexibility.

Hi Phill got hold a window xp home disc and it took the windows code that came with the pc thanks for your help

Ok, so now it's installed, you have to activate it within 30 days .... this may prove difficult.
Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools. Click on the appropriate activation icon, and then click Activate Windows.
If you are prevented from doing so, the Operating System will cease to function, when the 30 days are up.
