Unless you are burning massive amounts of CD-Rs then I would say it won't affect your burner. The one thing I will suggest is not using it as an all-in-one drive (ie reading/ripping DVDs, Recording DVDs, Reading/ripping CDs, Recording CDs) as that puts quite a bit of wear and tear on it. I use my writer to burn CD-Rs and DVD-Rs but I use a DVD-ROM drive to do all of the reading/ripping applications (that and DVD-ROM drives tend to rip faster). I had a Pioneer 105 that gave out after 8 months because I was using it as an all-in-one drive and so I got a DVD-ROM to reduce the wear and tear on it. Some will claim that it doesn't matter if you do everything on your DVD Burner but common sense tells you that the more you use any piece of electronics, the sooner it wears out. That and from a financial standpoint it is logical as well. Even the best DVD-ROM drive won't cost you more than $40USD (shipped) and a decent DVD Writer runs between $100-$130USD. So would you rather replace a $40 MAX unit or a $100-$130 unit?

Well I still have two CD writers in my system. They are simply faster.

Yeah but only by 2-3 minutes max. Most DVD Writers support 16x or 24x writing now.

Like I said I have two CD burners so that is 2-3mins*2. 16x or 24x is too slow for me. Still have room for one more drive, so I guess if I bought two more DVD writers then one of the CD burners would have to go.
Can't see the point of ripping a CD writer out just because you got a DVD burner especially when it is capable of burning CDR's at 52x vs 16x in my case for the DVD burner.
Then again if I had no drives then I would have to justify the ~$50AUD for the CD burner on top of the price of a DVD burner for those few minutes.
