so i'm paying close attention to the progress of the modding of the 360 and so far this (http://softlife.blogspot.com/) seems to be one of the jumps I was waiting for, there is still alot of work to be done, but the birght and talented are on task again.

Ya I imagine a lot of groups are working on this, I always wondered if having it so accessable (hard drive, networked, streaming content), wouldn't all that make it easier or create more loop holes?

came accross this backward compatible update
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm
x-s pointed out this :)
The zip-file contains one 2.5MB .xex file (which will give BC-support for over 200 games!), that's an Xbox 360 executable (like .xbe for the original Xbox). Once burned on CD-R or DVD+-R you'll be able to run the update on your 360 from the CD/DVD
looks like we maybe playing our "backup" soon, without a modchip :P ***fingers crossed** Dreamcast 2...lol

I don't know about without a modchip but what I see is a modified version of one of the softmod installers coming out for this sucker. So it will still need to be "modded" but not with a chip.

It's still to early in the game, the signature key has to be found and alot of memory dumps have to be made to find out what this dashboard is actually doing, the fact the hardrive is not native to the system already makes it more of challenge to get hardrive support.
http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2005/11/29/the-hypervisor-and-its-implications/
On the Xbox 360, the hypervisor program is the bottom line, running in kernel mode (which means it has unlimited access to the system's hardware). The operating system runs on top of the hypervisor in user mode, and its access is meted out by the hypervisor. This means that the hypervisor can emulate the original Xbox without the 360's operating system being involved.
The security implications are unfortunately clear: nothing is going to get past the hypervisor unless it's vetted by Microsoft, and the hypervisor's security is most likely built in to the boot sequence with cryptographic signing to prevent tampering.
Although its not really a "hack", it is nice to see that you can use the usb ports to add extra hard drives for playing music on the 360.
