Alright guys,

I'm trying to reinstall windows, then have the profiles on a differnt drive to windows. (im doing this to use a bit of software called deep freeze that stops any changes to selected drives)

I followed this guide:

Mapping User Profiles

This scenario should be used in cases when all user information must be retained.
1. The user data must be allocated in a different partition so Deep Freeze does not touch those files. This can be accomplished using any of the Storage Solutions described earlier.
2. Load any applications and files that the users may require.
3. Open the Registry Editor; go to the Start menu, and choose Run.
4. Type regeditin the Open field and click OK. The Registry Editor appears.
5. Modify the following registry entry to read as follows:
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Key: Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Profil eList

Name: ProfilesDirectory

Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ

Value: path (i.e. E:\Profiles)

Ok, so i did that, and then made another user account, and it does run from e;/ drive. But theres so many problems. You cannot change the backdrop, you cannot save any files, as for some reason, any folder created automaticly becomes "Read Only"

Im sure someone on hear will have changed the path before, im guessing its a common thing for system admins or somthing.

Anyway, thanks for any help.

Cheers.

This doesn't answer the question, I'm just really curious as to why you need to freeze any changes to a drive?

And I am assuming you haven't moved everything to E, "frozen" it and then are wondering why everything is read only ...

haha, no man, i havent even installed the freezing software yet.

I've just set it up as normal now thanks.

But the idea was to have all software/apps/drivers etc on one drive - freeze that and then no matter what the rest of my family do in their profiles, i wont have to spend fooking ages working out why the printer aint working anymore.

But moving the profiles from C:\ to E:\ is somthing windows doesnt seem to like doing. It stops so much working, all i said in the last post, as well as programs not saying its installed for them.

Cheers though matey anyway.

Why don't you give them restricted user accounts so they can't change any settings?

never done what ur describing before, but it sounds like permissions issues

on the profile folder for the new user that isnt working properly, right click, properties, then goto the security tab - is the user listed there as having full control? they should be

regardless of that, have u tried doing the profiles this way:

change that reg key back to how it was
then create your users as normal
then right click my computer, manage, local users and groups, users. Then properties on a user and goto the profile tab, then type where you want their profiles to be in the profile path (eg: E:\profiles\emily)

windows should then create that folder and give the user the correct permissions on it
its like a simplified version of active directory

it might take a bit longer that way but believe me, it would work better
